What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

Tell me about it. As next door do nothing with their garden, it is growing in under the fence. I'm going to lean over the fence and give it all a dose of roundup.

Wow!!
After hubby help in the garden on Friday, on Saturday he cut the grass for me!! He found it very relaxing too, so hopefully will be willing to do it occasionally again. That will free up a few extra 2-hour blocks for me to work elsewhere in the garden....

On Saturday I removed the two acers that were in the large barrels on either side of the door. They just were not coping with the windy location. I hope I have moved them in time - one to the back of the patio bed, and the other to what is developing to a shade garden next to the shed.

I've risked planting my first outdoor tomatoes - tumbling toms in the large trough next to the house, so should be frost free now. A second courgette has been risked outside (again in a sheltered location). I have also planted my climbing iceberg rose, along with clematis tanguita- or however you spell it!- next to the garage. In doing so, I found where one of the utilities enters the house!! In a protected pipe, looks like yellow insulation fibre, covered by a root-looking paper-thin cladding. Fortunately, I was using a plastic trowel, gently, as I knew the meters were just the other side of the wall. Hope the breaking of the thin membrane won't cause permenant problems.

Weeded out another hundred or so bronze fennel seedlings (note to self - however dramatic the seedheads look, remove them in time this year!), pulled out a few rampaging roots of Apple mint, and started digging a hole for a black peppermint confinement bucket. Didn't finish, as gammon, tumbled tatties, and parsley sauce were calling me!

 

Started the battle against the weeds in the big bed. Got a fair bit cleared but still loads to do

Dug out the rest of the grass infront of the hedge so the new bed is complete and the plants have now been planted in it. Still a few patches where i need to finish weeding under the hedge.

Then moved pots around

 

I fed all the seedlings with a weak tomato food , another week and they will be out to get on with in the big wide world

 

Bit of a depressing weekend really. I got round to planting out my Tricyrtis. I had lifted them towards the end of last year and potted them up while I re-designes my garden. Unfortunately, the Vine weevils had got in there and done their business, the results being some very poor looking specimens. Guess the mild winter didn't help. Most will recover in time, but it's the loss of my Favourite, Tricyrtis Monoyama which I am particularly upset by. It's not a strong grower anyway and I fear it's done for, fingers crossed that those few roots ate capable of growing!...

Installed the netting to support the cucumbers in the greenhouse today and already a few plants have attached tendrils to it.

 

Mostly pruning which brings me to a question I would really like an answer to (started a new thread on it but no replies).

My young virginia creeper has recently borne its first new green shoots. Despite my vigilance, I saw that the slugs/snails had got to it and only shortened, gnarled leaf remnants are left. I don't know whether or not to prune them back or whether to let them be and they will continue to form fresh leaves from the bits left there.

 

Nothing all weekend as wasn't at home. Tonight I had a massive headache so spent a few hours trying to shake it off in the garden. Did lots of potting on, watering and planted out 2 replacment bare root roses which arrived the other day and have been soaking. They don't look much better than the ones received before, and I feel planting them in May is pretty much a lost cause. Gave them about 2 gallons of water each and left them to it.
I've slowly started hardening off My dahlias now, just as the number of slugs has increased!

 

Don't give up on the new roses this year Charlie. You may get some flowers late summer.

 

Thanks @Sheal, I couldn't really plant them as deep as I would've liked as I hadn't planned on them (the original ones have a few leaves each now) therefore didn't really have the room. I'm going to see what happens, and if they make it move them in the winter.

 

Yesterday did some weeding ,plenty more where they came from

I was going to give my 'garage border' another dose of Nemaslugs but the rose off the watering can had gone walkabout...found it at 10pm last night so it was safely stashed away in my dressing gown pocket ready for this mornings treatment

 

Planted out the rainbow chard and some kale.
Sowed more mixed lettuce into my cut and come again containers in the kitchen.
After dinner i aim to empty the greenhouse and do a slug hunt.

 

got up all ready to mow the lawn and it starts raining so thats not going to get done today
