I planted up one of my mints in a new sunken pot in the herb garden a few weeks ago. I had wondered why it hadn't flourished, and was therefore not surprised to find vine weevil grubs in the med. pot it had been in. All the grubs were picked out and put on the bird table, and I'm hoping that the greater exposure to ants etc in the sunken pot will remove any stragglers. First vine weevil I've seen here...

Oh dear. It must be the mild winters. I'd imagine in cold winters many in pots would be frozen.

Oooohh lolimac i have foxglove alba to sow this year too. Its on my to do list

Dead headed tulips. Cut some of next doors lilac tree back so i can cut the hedge in the next few days. trimmed the hedge with seceteurs round the pergola are and the shed ready to use the electric hedge trimmer in the rest

Cut some small branches off the camellia as i want it to grow as a tree rather than a bush

And noticed one tomato plant in the greenhouse was looking kind of dry and floppy which was confusing as it was sitting in a tray of water with the others. Moved the pots to see what was wrong and it dropped! it had been sitting resting on the side of the other two pots so hasnt had water for a while. Picked right up after a good drink.

We have had the first two mild winters in 10 years (previous 8 years have had at least a week where the temps went down to -15c) I will be on look-out to any distressed plants this year!

Mowed the top lawn, OH removed some turf from round the big rose/honeysuckle/Virginia creeper combo. Swept the paths, hoed a few areas and pulled up some nettles. Also picked a vase for the house. :spinning:

I've weeded the beds ready for annuals but need to trim the edges at some point, they get scruffy so quickly!

Sheal, are you putting annual seeds in, as I've got some Cornflowers and I was wondering if it was getting too late ?

No Anthony it's too late for seeds here but not for all those plants I've been nurturing from seed since the middle of February. :)

It may be a little late for Cornflowers as they take 14 to 21 days to germinate. You could try starting some off indoors to see if they are any quicker.

Hi, I've put a border round my bird bath today and planted some petunia and pansies in, it should look nice in flower.

I might leave them now for this year then. I already have a mix ( Godetia, Clarkia, Love in a mist, Candytuft, Larkspur, Didiscus and Ostrich plume Aster) growing as a cottagey garden a compliment in the rose bed but I forgot all about the Cornflowers till this week.

Over the weekend I moved the ribes ready for my greenhouse base to go down.
And then concreted the base for my greenhouse in.
And then fixed the frame on.

Hopefully the weather will hold this weekend for popping the glass in.

Moved on 28 tomato seedlings and 2 plants, last night! Think I might have some spare for the school plant sale! :-)

(The 2 plants look healthier today, they needed a big drink! :-))

Hi I am new to this site and not sure where to post this. My job today is watching the lack of action in my veg plot........Based in Cheshire with long south facing garden. Planted my Jerusalem Artichokes in late March (weather had been awful). Patiently waited for this invasive species to take over my veg plot. Waited, waited, still waiting. Of the 10 I planted not one appears to have germinated. Is there any common reason for this? All the websites I have found talks about them being so easy to grow and dire warnings about how they are so hardy that they take over. I bought the tubers from Bridgemere Garden Centre in Shropshire ie not a bargain basement shop.... even used a tape measure to ensure they were planted according to instructions and added food to get them going. Any tips on where i went wrong will be much appreciated. THANK YOU

What did the tubers look like when you planted them, were they nice and plump like a potato? If not, they may have dried out too much and perished. Sounds like you got them at a good time of year though so shouldnt be an issue unless they were particularly poorly looked after by the GC.

Jerusalem artichokes are a perennial sunflower and they do need warmth to get going, despite the recent improved weather, early spring was cold in most parts of the country and many plants have been held back. My Crocosmias have only just started to appear and

Personally, I would dig one up and see if there is any life in them

Been out checked the greenhouse, and pondering what the heck is munching through my cucumber and ponder is it too late to sow again, or can I sow some out at the allotment,

Watered all my containers, which are presently lingering in the middle of the courtyard (new main patio) waiting for me to decide where to locate them.... Had to pull them out of the greenhouse and plant the others up, seriously running out of room in the greenhouse.

Can't decide on containers positions until I sorted the railway line distance markers!

My father-in-law was a bridge inspector for British Rail, he acquired them back in the 80's, and MIL, moved them into her garage a couple years after his passing...

                          Two options,

1, position them as single items

2, we have half a railway sleeper left over from our garden refurb, so perhaps a nice bench!

But off to my allotment now, still got a lot of work out there to do, which is going to be made slower as my wheel barrow has been nicked....
