What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

Definitely not too late to re-sow, I don't even sow cucumbers until Mid May, or any Cucurbits, squash, they need heat to grow well and later sowings always perform better for me.

Cant advise on positioning, I get my wifes opinion on that!

 

Brilliant I shall sow some more tonight... Can't have a disappointed son who absolutely loves them, and eats them like fruit!

That's what my hubby says to me, you're know best! I'm siding more one the bench idea...

The brain is starting to whirl now as I start seeing it...

FIL's favourite flower was the Fushia, I took a few cuttings from his Fushia's last year that are coming along lovely now.. If I remember rightly his favourite colour was blue, so some nice blue containers at each side of the bench with the Fushia in. So hubby and MIL have somewhere to sit and contemplate.

I think hubby going to be taken with the idea when I tell him later when he gets home from work..

 

cutting the hedge in instalments. i forgot how exhausting this is after not doing it for months. my body is not happy lol

if i have any energy left hopefully i can plant out the sunflowers and artichokes

also took 3 sunflower plants round to next door :-)

 

I have finally identified a growing young tree to be an ash tree....only it is not well placed to grow where it is and not sure I want it anywhere else. At the moment am trying to unearth all of its roots intact. The thinking is to transport it to (a) either some wasteground or (b) leave at a recycling depot with a label as to what it is and the conditions it likes to grow in.

 

What does your seed packet say mine says up till half way through june or in august/September to flower next year

 

Thanks for that. Strangely when you suggested digging one up to ascertain status, I thought, Yes that is the obvious thing to do. Indeed so obvious that it had not occurred to me: DOH!

So I dug a little in the area where one was planted and yes I saw some sign of life that looked like it had come from a tuber. So perhaps it was just the cold weather. It has been lovely today but still only circa 12.5 degrees so we got some way to go before it gets really warm. The tubers did look in fairly good condition by the way.

I just love artichokes so am so keen to ensure that they are nurtured. THANKS for your advice.

 

Most suppliers state sowing up to May or June @Dips, but with germination taking up to 21 days it's leaving it late for them to put on growth and flower for this summer. It also depends where you are in the country. Instructions on all seed packets are only a guide line and quite a few I have to ignore because of the climate here.

 

I've just come back from the allotment, been out there since dinner time (took lunch with me) I had a really good afternoon, and finally the allotment is starting to look like a growing area lol...

Cleared some more ground, planted some carrots, beetroot, I managed to sow my onions and garlic, not sure if I'm late with these but decided to bung them in see what happens...

I was given some Swiss Chard to plant by one of the others, never tried it so it be interesting.

Hopefully get my petrol strimmer on saturday, so be able to strim the grass paths, they so really need doing...

Now sort tea out, then water the greenhouse, containers and sow some more cucumber seeds... Phew this rate I be glad to be back in work tomorrow with a 12 hour shift..

your quite a bit further north i reckon we might be able to manage it in sol and kiddi

im sowing mine august anyway cause i havnt manage to stay on top of the weeding and im hoping by august or sept i might have managed it

 

Don't worry Dips, three quarters of Britain doesn't know where the island is, not even the post office! Mail quite often goes to the Isle of Wight instead. Here's a map and mileage below. I've taken it from Heysham which is the nearest port.

if im honest the only island i ever remember where it is is Jersey. no idea why but yeh

is it quite windy on the island?

 

Bit the bullet today and planted my main crop of tomatoes into a cold greenhouse. It was either that or pot them on, they were completely root bound in the 5" pots.
I also picked some more Rhubarb, we are starting to get a bit fed up of it now. Some horse muck in the winter and a handful of general fertiliser in March and it goes crazy.

 

To be fair the post office does know where it is. Apparently the mail bags for Mann and Wight stand together but the sorters don't seem to be able to read and define the two!

Yes it's windier than most places and has fairly high rainfall. Summer temperatures are lower here but winter temperatures tend to be higher so we rarely get snow.
