Yesterday I spent two hours picking stones out of (what was) the lawn, which the builders managed to get all over the place from the sand they were using. Then mowed the lawn and swept the path/patio/drive.

I am a broken man this afternoon - finished laying the turf to cover up the old path, then used three leftover rolls to replace the grass at the back that bit the dust because of a combination of trampoline shade and lavatera shade. We then put some seed along the edges of the new turf, and covered that with nice fresh compost, and also did the same with some bare patches; then we put four canes up, tied string between them, and sellotaped strips of foil to the string to hopefully keep the birds away.

I have another two rolls of turf, but not a grain of energy left, and in far too much pain, so they have been laid on top of the current grass where they are intended to go, unrolled to get light and water, and there they can live for a day or three until I recover.

Battered, bruised, blistered and in no doubt that this arthritis is definitely changing me - worst of all, I am still sober!

I'm technically on call until tomorrow, but am more than willing to make a decision on the phone or even go in by taxi should something happen (rare occurrence); gong to be cracking the seal on a nice bottle of Grants before too long. We have even cheated and ordered takeaway for dinner.

I promise I won't be far from my chair (mostly because I can hardly walk!)

That is very generous plantings @Loki no wonder you are running out of space!
They are all going to be ready for eating around the same time so that is going to be a LOT of lettuce to get through - and, as you say, it does take up a lot of space.
It may be an idea - and space saving - to sow less seeds but more regularly to give you a constant supply all through the season. So, perhaps just sow 5 of each variety (and that will still give you a goodly crop) one week and then 5 seeds of each variety two weeks later and so one through the season :) Much more cost effective than buying lettuce and much, much more cost effective than sowing 120 lettuce on one day :)

@fat controller a healing hug for you :grphg: Just wondering about the turf you have Unrolled ... wouldn't it be better to keep it rolled up until you need it? Sure I've read that somewhere.

I thought it would yellow too much if left rolled up, and also thought it would appreciate a drink. I will most likely lay it tomorrow - should only take an hour or so. I now have my first dose of 'medicine' beside me, and I have a nice full belly after our cheats dinner. Only relaxation from here on in tonight

                    Hi"M",
I know, a bit silly! They are at slightly different stages and i plan to use some as cut and come again:)
We do eat an awful lot of lettuce though (we have 5 kids, lots of mouths to feed:phew:) and I'm also catering for the slugs and the dogs destructive tendencies:rolleyespink:
I sowed a trough with 4 types of cca the other week, the dog decided to bury her bonio in it!:thud:

You know what I am like @Sheal - determination can do no more for me. Still, I may as well do it while I still can

You have my sympathies (good thinking though :blue thumb: ). Someone mentioned on here some while back about using Vaseline (other petroleum jelly products are available) around pots to deter slugs/snails. Well, I planted up a baby hosta last week and coated the rim of the pot in Vaseline ... so far, so good (no slug/snail has crossed the barrier) :blue thumb: I'll let you know if that is still the case when I do my outside lettuces ;) Can't help with the destructive dog though :doggieshmooze:

Fell asleep on the sofa for 2 hours today, must've been more tired than I thought. Woke up just before 6 and stayed out in the garden til it got dark!
Lots of hoeing weeds, potting on and planting out done. First few dahlias are out in gaps made by removing bluebells. Bit of a sweep up and prepared a big box of plants for OH's brother tomorrow. Pretty happy all in all.
