The nappy compost is performing really well for me so far - the semi-circle basket by the front door is still nice and moist and crumbly and hasn't had a drop of water near it since Sunday - its been quite warm here too. The next thing it will get is a liquid feed :blue thumb:

That's good to hear FC. :) I soaked the nappy filling in and old washing up bowl, I didn't think it was ever going to stop taking water. The consistency was like wallpaper paste.

I wish I'd known about nappies a month ago. I've already done ours ..... 2 hanging baskets and 8 half baskets.

It really is remarkable the amount of water that it takes on; wallpaper paste consistency seems the easiest to work with too, any thinner and it is a pain in the bum to transfer into the bucket to mix with compost, and any thicker and you end up with bloomin' great lumps. Be careful not to add too much to the compost too, else it turns into a really gooey, sticky mess that would most likely suffocate the plants.

I only picked up on the idea from Pamsdish's thread, so this is the first year using it. After last year, I was really hoping for a dazzling display this year, but the weather is currently thwarting me.

So you'll be going shopping in the not to distant future then? Not so much strain on the back either. I've mixed small amounts of cement in there too, I'd be lost without it. It's an old metal one that was here in the garden when I moved in and the legs are rusting badly now so I don't know how much longer its got. I'd buy a decent metal one again, anything else isn't rigid enough for my liking. :)

I'm not sure that I'm convinced. A couple of points.......

How about if we have a really wet summer or what if there is just a really heavy downpour or storm? Isn't there a chance of waterlogging?

What does it do to the consistency/drainage of the compost? I wouldn't plant anything of mine in something with the consistency of "wallpaper glue".

Also, a lot of plants put on a spurt of growth just before the compost begins to dry out. Isn't using these just keeping the compost at the same level of wetness/dampness all the while?

What about any chemical reaction with feed or if you need to use any chemical spray etc.

I'm not doubting or trying to put a downer on the idea but I'd like more testing/information on it first I think.

Had a bit of time after a long day at work and a gym class.
Planted out a few sunflowers, watered the greenhouse, tied in a clematis and filled the bird feeders. Now everything has filled out I've got loads less weeds germinating. Hoed yesterday for the first time in a fortnight and there wasn't many at all.
