Just been doing a search on yellow pear tomatoes. T&M sell Ildi, which says it's a yellow pear, but the photo is of an oval mini tomato. It also says that it naturally stops growing at 5-6 foot.... The plants we have were definitely sold as "yellow pear" (well, " poire jaune" to be exact!) and are very pear-shaped. They want to keep on growing, and so we have actually zig-zagged the cordon up the trellis work! The plants my friend grew were up to 12 foot long....

Edited to say, most of the websites that have the correct "yellow pear" (fruit size, colour, plant growth style) are in the States, but this site does seem to be describing the correct plant - certainly the cool late season cropping, which was why it was a favourite plant at my friend's place...

Kinda cheating as I didn't do anything, but the builders added new external doors to our garden yesterday, which is really exciting :)

@shiney I love this, do you think I could grow one in a large tub?

@Val.. Yes, if it's in a large tub the restricted root growth will keep it to a reasonable size. :blue thumb:

It's a lovely tree that's at its best from late autumn to late spring. That's when it's not in leaf. The leaves are not particularly attractive but the branches and catkins are very striking.

We remove about 5ft, all round, every second year but it's very well established and has plenty of root space.

I was out very early this morning working in the garden, before the heat came to blast me.

The new 55ft bed needed a lot of plants tying in/back and that took a couple of hours. By then the sun was doing its thing :phew:

Then it was a an hour and a half weeding/bind weeding. Followed by me assisting the man who had come to replace a pane of glass in the greenhouse. He was having difficulties and needed another pair of hands. The pane of glass is 5ft x 2.5ft.

There was a problem getting the old one out as the guttering needed to be removed. Then he had a problem because the glass was 1/4" to long! We weren't going to try and shave that bit off so we needed to think of a way to keep it in there. Managed that with some roof glass clips and all's well.

Then I picked 10lb of beans. That's it for gardening today as the temperature has now reached 30C :hate-shocked:

Over the last few days I've had the greenhouse base laid and the frame put on it. On Monday the guys will do the glazing strips and glass and secure the whole thing down while I'm stuck in London for a work meeting. Can't wait to get home and see how it looks finished! I've had the deformed (and, it turns out, rotten) ornamental cherry tree chainsawed down in the front garden which now looks huge compared! So today is cleaning millions of glass panels for the greenhouse ready for Monday, and tomorrow is more work on the front garden. I also collected two sacks of manure from my friend's livery yard this morning and she might be giving me a spare compost bin and wheelbarrow tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
