What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

I've earthed up the spuds again and later today I'll be skiving off work to empty out the summer hanging basket (which looks very limp, dead and pathetic now) and plan an autumn one.

 

The positive about this lovely rain - I can get all my fig plants washed!

You could call it "IKEA pots through the ages"!

The plants had about 8 hours of gentle rain, which has got to have done them good. It has been quite a dry summer, and very windy, so this is the first chance I have to put them for the summer bath. Thought I might miss out completely this year!

 

I planted an autumn hanging basket (Red Hook Sedge, sedums and pale pink cyclamens) and a winter square pot (cineraria, red cyclamens and trailing ivy). Also earthed up the spuds again and bought more compost.

We do also have a fig tree, as in produces the fruit, in a pot outside. Hubby has banned it from being planted in the ground next to the house. So in my last potting-on session, it was put into an intermediate sized pot, and probably will end up being trained against the wall next to the garage, even though it is a west North-west wall (the more southerly walls are reserved for yellow pear tomatoes!). At our last home, which was rented, there was a huge fig tree growing against the wall on the patio. It never managed to ripen any fruit, but did manage to damage the patio, the wall, and probably the foundations of the house!!

 

Yesterday was over 4 hours of hubby and I labouriously digging around a well-established hazel stool, in the rather ambitious hope of being able to remove it. Today will be more of the same!

This morning, whilst cleaning my teeth, I saw the first squirrel of the season working around the other hazel stools, and the oak tree. I'm afraid my first thought when I saw that lovely rich red tail was "don't you dare plant any more hazelnuts!!".

 

Yes, mine was getting a bit tired and past it. Looking back, I can identify some small but cumulative 'operational errors' as a newbie that contributed to it not continuing as long as it might otherwise have done. I think someone more experienced might have got another few weeks out of it. But to be honest, even if it had been immaculate it would have been relegated round the side or back of the house this weekend and an autumn one done for the front. Autumn is in the air now, I'm really feeling that change, and I love how the basket reflects that. Sad though this is, those sludgy dull colours and sparse shapes are my absolute favourite
And I'm thrilled with the winter pot (design taken from Gardeners' World; I cannot claim the credit). I actually went back to the garden centre this morning because I could tell I'd not stuffed it enough. It was rearranged with another two cyclamen and another ivy and looks much fuller now. Really pleased with how basket and pot are looking!

After two months of not being able to do anything in the garden due to building work (except watering to keep things going) this weekend we've been let back out! And it's been a blitz of pot moving, planting, trimming back into shape. It's been so much fun to finally be back out there. And it's all starting to look pretty good :D

 

Spent a few hours first spraying the lawn with iron to kill off some of this years rampant moss growth.

I had so much " FUN " doing this I decided to add copious amounts of weedkiller to my mixture and went up onto the roof to spray that too.
Got some funny looks from the neighbour and managed to finish it without falling off which was nice
