Getting up on a ladder and lopping off the rosehips from my tall rosebush plus pruning back some branches.

(There's a reason why it is so tall....I have a disturbed/obsessive anti social neighbour who yanks the roses off, breaks branches, has killed one of the rose bushes by spraying it with bleach...along with next door neighbour's hedge. It's a case of 'don't get me started...!' [IMG] )

Well most neighbours would not stoop to such unprovoked and destructive antics as this neighbour. Thankfully, she is the exception.

Have had very good day. I made the most of glorious sunshine and cleared / tidied / weeded heaps within reach of paths or lawn. It would have been very unwise to tread on my very clay soil after all that rain, but the texture was just right for digging into.

Is it necessary to seriously dig - with big fork - over soil which is to be left to overwinter? If so, is now also the time to add growmore as you dig?

I started weeding the rose bed out the front and was surprised to find the soil has massively improved since i planted the roses. It use to be dry sandy and crumbly its mot nice and rich and less dust like. Its like someone secretly mixed in compost.

Also cut some of the hedge and retrained the Scottish flame flower into the hedge as it had started climbing up a branch of the lilac tree.

I've tried in the past to grow that, Dips, after seeing it in several National Trust Gardens but always failed due to having slightly alkaline soil which it doesn't seem to like.:dunno:

Ah thats a shame i had 8 bits of root delivered and 5 started growing then i planted them one and have two left its thriving in my hedge.

No idea how or why i just left it to it

First today we cleared the side alley of loads of bagged turf and random stuff and took it all to the tip.
Later on we emptied my greenhouse out and I threw away some things which had been struggling since our holiday. Swept all the staging down and put everything back in much better organised so there is room for things I want to overwinter.
I also had chance to give the dahlias a feed and take loads of cuttings from fuschias, verbena and perennial wallflower Bowles mauve.
Finally I've admitted defeat with my summer hanging baskets (easy fill) and swapped them for 2 willow type ones with heuchera, violas, ivy and dianthus from Aldi. I only had enough for 3 plants for each so I hope they will be ok.

I sawed about a million scaffold boards for raised beds. My arms are killing but I expect I'll look like WonderWoman (or at least my arms will) by the time I'm finished.

I know I sawed millions of pieces, but when I counted afterwards I could only find 20 of them :dunno: :heehee:
16 to go, plus 24 corner posts... :phew:

today, lots of pruning, tiding up. I did not order my bulbs this year. not really necessary. but did want a few more of a certain type, its not that anyone would even notice. so, if I do, I do. there is enough to do around this property anyway.

We harvested the tomatoes, both veg bed (gardeners delight and harbinger) and tumbling toms. Brought in the chilli plants that had been heeled into the space on the veg bed whilst we were on our holidays, plus the mini aubergines and the last of the beans.

Then settled down to watch Wales play Uruguay in the rugby, with some bread and some of the tomato and chilli pickle we made before the hols...
