What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

Trimmed some of the hedge its almost all done now

 

Sorted the raised bed, got rid of the old strawberries and everything that had bolted or done booger all. Lots of lovely turned soil for the mad mutt to bury stuff in now home made dog defences back out the shed

 

Divided a pot bound Leucanthemum (got 7 plants) and sowed some snapdragons, ammi majus, scabious, delphinium and verbascum.
Gave the hedge bottom outside our house a rake over and direct sowed poppies, aquilegia, cornflowers and nigella there.
Later on we went to collect some shrubs I have been gifted so gave those a topping up of fresh compost (they have been potted up) and a big drink.

 

It's been a lovely day here in London. Have spent most of the day outside tidying and rearranging different areas. So much rubbish removed. Going out to buy a fire pit tomorrow to keep it cozy while outside. Now I have the space back. Ha ha.

 

I visited the farm shop , golly what lovely plants, I could have had a real spend up in there today! But I controlled myself I bought 5 cyclamen, Rhodedendrum, red pokers & bird feed then it was off to the garden centre where I bought 3 packets of bulbs . I've planted everything up except from the 50!dwarf Iris, I might put those under the plum & Apple trees, not quite sure yet
Then I Cut back the budlia & had a general tidy up.

 

Planted around 250 dwarf daff/narcissi, crocus and Dutch iris. Still got about another 200 to go, more Dutch iris, anemone de caen and blanda and various allium.

Started to put perennials grown from seed into their final positions.

 

I've sorted out the 'eye' bed in my front garden today. Pruned down the Lupins, cleared the dead annuals, weeded and dug it over. I've left the wilting Lavender spikes as the bees are still enjoying those.

 

Trimmed up a few Leylandii hedges today. It's one thing i actually despise taking a hedge cutter to.

 

Is that because you despise Leylandii hedges or because you don't like trimming them GardenBadger?

 

It's looking a bit sorry for itself now with most of the annuals gone. The soil is bone dry too so the sprinkler will be on tomorrow.

Ideas for herbaceous perennials would be welcome please? It's in sun for 90% of the day, sandy soil and more often than not breezy/windy.

 

I personally don't mind them aesthetically, They just obviously need regular maintenance, which is why I believe they're hated by many. My personal hatred though is the trimmings get everywhere, absolutely everywhere. My girlfriend went off the wall when I got changed after work and dragged Leylandii all around the bedroom carpet. I can't get my own wash room built in the garage fast enough.

 

I know what you mean about the trimmings GardenBadger.

Here's one to haunt you, 90ft long and nearly 15ft high! Not mine but my neighbours and trying to maintain my side of it was a nightmare as I'm no longer a spring chicken. It had to go as I discovered it was destroying my drains and foundations so I grew Hebe's from cuttings to create a new hedge which is now 4ft high. On the other side of the garden there is 80ft of Escallonia, that's not mine either! That's nearly as bad to trim as the Leylandii was, it sticks to everything.

 

Just been out in the dead of night... watering everything! Bit of a mission as our building work is on going and we don't have an outdoor tap yet (or anything to attach the hose to since the indoor tap I was using was taken away). Not quite sure how everything will make it through this dry spell. The big Dahlias and Salvias are really being put to the test right now.

More positively, I'm deadheading loads of plants too because they're flowering like crazy.

Oh, I also received all of my white flowering bulbs this week. 80 x Tulips, 50 x snowdrops, 10 x Fritillarias and 16 x Alliums 'Purple Sensation' (for after the white spring flowers). I plan to plant them all this weekend (except the tulips which I'll save for Nov). Just need to work out where they are going to go now! The fun bit

 

Dug my spuds up, some did good but will grow fewer next year. Also started trimming back perennials,tied in some more raspberries. Watered the mixed leaves in the greenhouse, really well worth growing these.
