All I've got left to tend outside is my brussel sprouts. I do still have some dismantling of electrics in the greenhouse to do but that is just puttering work.:)

I had a wander around the garden just checking on the borders and shrubs. The wildlife pond is up to the brim with rain water. It is at the lowest point of the garden and so quite of lot of the water from rain drains into it. The fish seem happy enough swimming around near the top and weren't interested in the few specks of food I threw them:dunno::snork:.

Wandering round the garden at 2 a.m. rearranging the bird feeders in a safer place and battening down the hatches. :phew:

Well, not been up to much this week, but on Friday I did a few hours outside...

Two compost bays were turned, so I now had a half-full "to use" bay (half is pure compost, the other half a compost/manure mix), one 2/3 full breaking down bay, and an empty "filling" bay. One interesting thing I noticed, during the forking... I had layered the middle bay with alternating fresh manure and fresh composting materials. This all rotted down thoroughly. I then must have had a couple more bags of fresh manure left, so I'd put this in the filling bay, and had obviously been unable to be as thorough in the mixing. As I turned this into the breaking down bay, I was hitting patches where the straw had actually dried out - and therefore there had been very little decomposition. This was about 2-3 foot down from the top of the pile - even though there were areas at a similar level that were totally sodden. Made me realise once again the importance of turning the heap, and also what a relatively dry year we have had. Still, it will all be well rotted down by the spring, when I next need to turn the heaps...

I did a little weeding, cutting back of herbaceous perennials where they were going over (a side note, anyone else have oak trees still hanging onto their leaves?), and plants that had been impacted by playing dogs! My filling bay is no longer empty!!

Feeling a little shattered after that, I gathered a few sprigs of cherry laurel, and three different conifers (green, gold, and varigated White/green), and retreated to the warmth of the kitchen, to assemble the winter wreath for the garden gate. Quite pleased with the result!

Oh no :( I just cut half of my spring Clematis off by accident. I was removing a honeysuckle tangled in it and someone distracted me :( one of my bigger mistakes. Live and learn!

Just a bit of pottering about on a nice mild Sunday afternoon. :)

Finished tidying up the beds around the lawn. Cut back the last of the herbaceous stuff, did a bit of weeding here and there and moved a couple of plants to a different location.

As the wind had dropped I took the opportunity to have a big bonfire. I normally wait until it's about 7ft high but it was only 6ft.

It's five weeks since the last one so I had to rattle around in the bottom of the pile to chase out any hibernating animals. Nothing appeared. I haven't seen any hedgehogs for a few years but we get field mice and, once, a whole herd of rabbits who had made a warren in the giant mound of ash. The rabbits didn't all come out when I was rattling the heap but they soon came out when the fire got going.

You could have popped round to us and dug out new developed plants from our lawns. They're always coming up from up to 10ft from our plants and, sadly, get mowed down.

I started on cutting back the big grasses and a lot of the crocosmia, filled two wheelie bins in an hour and put two giant barrow loads on the compost heaps.

Raked up the last of the leaves....... millions of them and not one from a tree in my gareden:wallbanging:

Put the beast (gunnera) to bed win rootth a fleece / plastic sheet/ then weed membrane. Normally i cover it with loft insulation but really couldnt be bothered wrestling with that itchy horror again :)

Gave the treeferns another wrap of fleece just in case of a winter bite, no straw used this year.

Had a look at the garlic which appear to be doing well I
in their roottrainers, might need protecting from the rain now.
