What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

Having purchased some plants for my hanging baskets, notably ranunculus and other smaller flowers (labelled on site but, now I see, not in their individual pots).

I am doing it properly this time, i.e using water gel powder (and I have some bagged horse manure to add a little of - mixing it into the soil already in the baskets).

I am always on the lookout for discarded stuff, i.e. in skips or at the recycling centre. Today I found 2 bamboo bed heads (new looking, sturdy, varnished, with a criss cross pattern). I have adorned them to parts of my garden to highlight certain areas.

Gave the greenhouse its annual operation 'glass clean'. All washed down and cleaned inside and out. Quite a big job as it's an 18ft by 8ft greenhouse, in two sections.

I make a point every year of removing any panes which have moss growing under the edges and scraping out the moss before it gets too established. Far less moss this year than usual, not sure why, although I recently read that we had well above the average hours of sunshine over the winter in this area, so maybe that helped.

Only managed to cut my finger once too, which is below average for me.

 

Soooo good to be out in the garden tidying up today. Birds singing sun on my back........ fantastic.
I have weeded all the borders and bagged up the last of the leaves that have blown in over winter, we are under quite a lot of mature trees so this took couple of hours and a roll of bin bags, leaves have all been wet and bags pierced and placed in a nice spot to do their magic.
I have had a good mooch around making notes of what I want to do this year.
Its gratifying to stand herewith my cuppa and look out at a tidier garden with this years garden starting to emerge ...Bliss!

Trimed the Berberis Thumbergii hedge 200 feet, now i'm going to sit down and dig out the thorns,

I finally got out in the garden today for a few hours

Repotted my tender bulbs that are in the shed (I lost some Gloriosa again), cut back last years growth outdoors and started weeding.

This Fritillaria imperialis bulb is dividing up nicely................


Digitalis ferruguinea are actively growing now...............


I also had to clear up my very dead Echium candicans...............

 

We should be getting sunshine tomorrow Armandii but I'm not making any promises.

I mowed my back lawn today, which was a bit of a challenge with a gale blowing plus the fact it's smothered in moss courtesy of this winter. Where does it come from so quickly!? I need to do some more serious seed sowing tomorrow, things are getting behind.

 

Oh well fingers crossed! Your temperatures are looking reasonable for next week though.

 

I spent some time turning over and breaking down the soil in the beds, removing small weeds as I went. The texture is looking good for direct sown annuals, but I will give it another 2-3 weeks I think before sowing.
I also pricked out some seedlings and placed them on the windowsill, only 1 of my baggy method salvias has germinated so far. Hopefully others might in the next few days.
Went to wyevale with a friend and managed not to buy anything- woo!
Oh, actually I'm lying, vine weevil killer and finch food half price from the range. Only found one pot with vine weevil this year but going to treat containers anyway.

 

Fixed the greenhouse again....and then the wind is blowing a gale tonight, so probably fixing the greenhouse again....tomorrow . However, still got some flower seeds sown and noticed my alliums are coming through
