What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

Yesterday was a good day: Sheal's Root is now .... history! As is the other (dead) thing/root which needed to come out. So, no more old roots/stumps left here
Treated myself to some solar lights (little dragonflies ) which I've twined around the top of the arbour. Amazingly, even though I only put them up at 6pm they have shone all night long

 

A great find, trunky! All the lavender plants on my eye bed are seedlings from my parents garden....

A guess on the 20th plant, could it be a pink? (Though early to be coming into flower) Or a Rosemary?

 

Does it have tiny pink flowers?

Hmmm jobs ...I'm doing absolutely nowt apart from sitting in the sunshine ,watching the chooks potter and imagining how it will look when all the plants come through and bloom...It's going to be amazing

Pruned and tidied up some salvias and hydrangeas thats it tbh

 

I fed my rose shrubs with Miracle Gro solution via the roots and also in a spray, for the leaves. As I did so I recalled that too much of this invites aphids...so will not spray the leaves again this year.

I read here about using a garlic solution to tackle aphids...is it as good/better than Roseclear? Need to apply often?

Also topsoiled the large fern I have and trimmed back some over zealous ivy. I tackled a rose sucker as best I could - got as close to the ground as possible but there were other plants growing there so did not want to damage them. How deep do you have to go (under the soil) to get rid of rose suckers?

I am starting to sit out in the sun now it's warmer.... However, I don't know if other gardeners are like me but pretty soon I am making mental notes of little jobs I can see that need doing.

My mum was a keen gardener but became too frail to continue. When I lived with her, as her carer, she never wanted to sit out in the garden...it reminded her too much of what she can't do. Sad - she was never one to relax and take it in anyway...always a workaholic.

 

We have a winner! Yes Sian, it is indeed a rosemary, well spotted.

Only a very small seedling at present, but hopefully it will take, so I can use it to replace the one I've had growing in a large pot for two or three years by the kitchen door.

 

Watering and removing leaves of plants with mildew, which seems to be a lot of them already :(

Finally planted out my 5 biggest delphiniums...I'm sure I can hear the slugs munching from here!
Did some weeding and planted out some tete a tete daffs and more primroses. Got 15 plants for a fiver from a localish nursery, and a Bowles mauve for 1.50 too. Not sure where I'm going to put that yet.
Really want to rebuild the arch and make my new raised bed but there's loads of other jobs to do (work on cars) atm. Finished the day by sowimg some petunia candy cane.

 

Spraying diluted washing up liquid in water quite often disperses aphids Rosebay.

It's best to take the sucker off at the base of the plant but that's not always possible unfortunately.

Rosebay....you could take a look at the threads in GC's 'Roses' forum, there is some good advice there for looking after them.

 

'Disperses' sounds like just displacing them though...do they just slide away on a soapy trail?

A water pistol would also disperse them....

 

Perhaps I should have explained better. It will kill the aphids in their chosen position and they will eventually dry out and drop off the plant.

 

All this work everyone is doing is making me feel lazy and getting behind with the work to be done. I'll try and make a start outside this weekend !
