It pays to be vigilant....I know my garden quite well but was surprised to find (in the space of 1-2 days) a young ivy circling up the newly planted virginia creeper (which is now starting to show welcomed new shoots). I was having none of that suffocation and yanked it up as low to the ground as poss! [IMG]

          Thanks @shiney :)

I don't have long handled shears, so would be doing the shaping with a half-moon cutter. Your edges look spot on - sadly, I doubt I will manage to get mine as good as yours; do you have any edging supporting the edges, or is it just well cut turf?

I am giving the grass daily waterings at the moment with the intention of getting the grass growing a bit before I stick the evergreen on at the weekend, and then I will leave things again for a week or so with the exception of watering; only then, I think, will I consider the shaping. Once I have the outer edge done, I want to get the bulk of the grass looking less like a field and more like a lawn before I go lifting the path and then laying turf or seeding it. Somewhere in among all that I will need to get the scarifier out, and also give the lawn a good aerating. I am also tempted to take the 'spent' compost from last years pots and tubs, break it all up and then scatter it across the lawn purely to get some organic material in there to soften the soil up a bit - - - that strategy has worked a treat on the borders.

Aside watering, I moved my passiflora from the front of the house to the back garden as it was clearly not happy where it was; I got two blooms out of it last year, and all its growth was at the top of a couple of long stems. Rightly or wrongly, I have dug it into the back of a border, coiled most of the bare stem atop the rootball, then backfilled with a healthy dose of nice fresh compost and then I put up a new trellis and weaved the plant in and out of it to get it started.

After that, I opened a half full bucket of chicken poo pellets that had clearly got damp over winter (properly smelly, and all clagged together), so I broke those up and shared out between my raspberries, the main flower border, then with the last bit made a liquid feed which I poured around the passiflora, my beloved cape fucshia that is now a strapping big plant (I have our @Jenny namaste to thank for that one :)), and my blackberries which are slowly getting going.

Then I decided to wash the windows.

@fat controller No edging and no turf :heehee: That lawn is approx. 30% grass, 30% weeds and 40% moss. I never water the lawns.

I shape the edges in late winter/early spring and they tend to last like that for the whole of the year. The edge is done in three phases. I cut the top 1" with shears, then cut from that 1" downwards with a flat, square edged, spade and then firmly consolidate the edge by sliding the spade along the edge and moving it up and down whilst pulling it back against the vertical edge. This creates a very firm and smooth edge.

It's hard work but saves having to do anything with it for the rest of the year. Having consolidated the edge it's very resistant to cracking during drought conditions.

The feed lines for the Autopots in the greenhouse have been installed and tested. Now if the weather would only warm up the toms would really start growing. Nights have been at, or close to, freezing, with snow flurries forecast for tomorrow.

Finished digging out the grass along the hedge to create a bed. It needs to be straightened up a bit tbh

                    Painted the fence

And picked all the dandelion flowers in the lawn. Although i need more yellow flowers in the garden as hoverflies and bees keep trying to pollinate my head

After dinner i will be watering everything again

CongratUlations Jack :yay: :star: Wishing you the same success with the others :dbgrtmb:

~ Potted on the plug plants that arrived yesterday.
~ Set up another bamboo wigwam on a third (established) pot and added some sweet pea seeds (Old Spice Mix) and moved a rosemary/lavender pot against it ... if my back door area doesn't smell divine by mid summer I will be quite disappointed! :heehee:
~ made a spider web trellis for the veg trug
~ reserved some gardening books online from the library :fingers crossed: I don't have to wait too long for them.
~ spend a lovely hour on the garden bench, in full sun, grooming Echo :cat-kittyandsmiley: (he's an indoor cat, but is permitted to sit on the garden bench outside - seeing as he's spent the past 6 months on it indoors :heehee: )

Ahh! Lots of little pleasures add up to one contented day
