What jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2015

Thanks for the congratulations on the exams everyone It was a mountain of info but lots of fun.

 

Perfect weather for hoeing, so I went round and did that. As soon as the bluebells have flowered (and been dug up!) I will be able to give a couple of areas a more thorough de-weeding.
Watered most things again, it's so dry I'm a bit worried my direct sown things won't appear at all. Though sweet peas and Delphs are as yet unmunched!

No luck with any larkspur seeds yet, does anyone have any tips for these?

Took some cuttings from the Nepalese Busy Lizzy in March and grew the rooted cuttings on. They have grown well in the mini GH. Also, last year the Laurentia seeded itself in Autumn and I potted up some seedlings and grew those on overwinter in the mini GH.
So, today, they were both planted up in the window boxes outside the front window ( North East facing) but get a few hours of morning sun now until the clocks go back. They will give a goodly splash of colours and ALL FOR FREE!! thus @Scrungee 's best price...

Today I did something I've been meaning to do for ages, which is recycle the recycling box. (Council changed their mind and we no longer use the blue plastic recycling boxes, after they replaced them with a large blue wheelie bin). This is what it looks like now (with the help of a bit of sacking material, and some twine). I have relocated my hostas (which you can't really see yet), my pieris (which hasn't been very happy in the hot back garden), some ornamental grasses, ivy, and a new hardy fern I bought from the market. I also re-potted and disguised some other shady plants (forgotten their name) to go alongside. These now live in the front garden, where they should be a bit happier in the shade:


I have also planted up my hanging baskets. I know it's still a bit early, but my plants have been outside for a couple of weeks now. Some are flowering, all are outgrowing their pots, and this last week I've struggled to keep them watered in the heat. So they are potted up, but not yet hanging (I've balanced the baskets in plant-pots, which is an idea I'm fairly certain I got from this forum). By day they are living on my decking in the sun. At night, I take them around the side of the house where it's sheltered, and the plant-pots keep them off the ground away from the cold. I'll probably hang them in a week or two. The one at the front is 'spare' trailing plants that I've potted up with an ornamental grass, and once again disguised the ugly plastic pot with sacking and twine. (I've also used sacking in the hanging baskets to hide my plastic lining):


Oh, and I also dead-headed my dried up daffs, and the ongoing chore of watering my container garden.

 

Hellebores absolutely overrun with aphids! I've never seen so many! Hand squished the lot. Not pleasant.

You have overfed them Jack and thats what happens with lush foliage I have black fly on both my acers in pots and they were re potted last year and have put on lots of new growth

 

Yes, it's a dreadful year so far for aphids. I'm overrun with them, too - don't remember it being this bad last year. I get rid of them with a water jet, and squirt them off at high-pressure.

 

Glad you said this my roses out the front were completely covered you couldn't see any of the stems. There were hundreds

Most are dead now thanks to a spray of distilled white vinegar, washing up liquid a d water

Asked the neighbour if i could spray his too as they were covered and are right next to mine out the front and luckily he said yes

So after it rains i will go out and squirt them all again and his

 

What proportions do you use? That sounds like the ideal squirting solution, I think I will try that myself, as I'm not sure that my water-jet treatment will be sufficient this year.

 

The vid i watched said water jet it first then spray so you have done the first bit

The recipe i followed didn't really have measurements so i gave a squirty bottle and i put a splash of vinegar on and then a squirt or two of washing up liquid. They said you could make it stronger or weaker based on your needs. But as long as its 90% water i think it would be fine
