What jobs are we doing in the garden today 2016

planted over 300 bulbs in the back yesterday and chucked down about 200l of compost cut the grass back and front this morning before a quick cuppa and sandwich, gonna pull some of the dahlias up and do a lot of pot sorting, planting and sowing seeds.. had my iris, apple trees and more bulbs delivered this morning so will sort them out too

 

Someone's going to busy today Linz. Hope you have plenty of plant labels. Enjoy.

 

Been away from home for the last couple of weeks and would like to stay longer but Mr Kandy wants to get home to his fruit trees as he is worried that the wind will have brought them all down and the bunnies,wasps and birdies will have eaten them all

 

Planted up two roses which I'd left in their pots for the Summer but are now in more permanent positions. Relocated another rose because having seen it through the summer it wasn't in the right place.
Divided and relocated some phlomis plus took some hollyhock plants (grown from seed this year) out of a trough and into their flowering position. Planted up a Japanese Anemone bought as a small thing in the Village garden sale earlier this year.
Planted some bulbs and thinned out some more wallflowers (careless abandonment seeds cast earlier this year) and put those in the same patch/es that I've planted the bulbs ... mainly so I remember where I planted bulbs
Dug up the gladioli bulbs and trimmed them so they can be dried and stored ready for next year.
Going to light the BBQ in a minute and sew on a button while that is turning grey

Failed on planting more bulbs. Plan is, to do my front pots and stick some in the front bed tomorrow.. patio and side pots were taking so long I still haven't finished them!

Re-potted geraniums, a salvia, fuschia, planted 2 hanging baskets and one of last years spring pots with trailing pansy and ivy, violas have self seeded so potted them up, pulled up 3 dahlias that were very sorry looking, put raspberries, chives, aquilegia, goji berry in a larger pots, picked a small bowl of mini toms, threw the rest of my tomatoes (blight) except one basket and came in.. too pooped! Winds picked up and it's looking very grey, tea is calling me

 

Agreed! But, do please read my post above yours ... I only went out for a cuppa *Now* I know why its the Devils Brew

 

Oh it is wicked! I sit on the steps out the back drinking my morning cuppa, 5 minutes later I'm potching with pots!

Had a major session sorting things out around the veg patch and the far corner of the garden today.

Started off by harvesting all the butternut squashes, a dozen or so decent sized squashes this year, which is better than normal.

Then cleared the whole patch, which consisted of about forty or so sweetcorn plants, underplanted with around fifteen pumpkin and squash plants, and cleared all the weed growth. Right, that lot needs to be chopped up and put in one of the compost bins; but, both my 4ft square compost bins are full to the brim.

The compost in one bin is ready to be used, so I emptied that one out, which produced about a dozen good barrowloads of compost, which was tipped out on the area which I'd just cleared.

But - before I can start filling the empty bin again; immediately behind the compost bins there is a section of wooden paling fence which I need to paint and behind that is the neighbour's tall leylandii hedge which I need to cut on my side.

So, move the compost bin so I can get at the fence, cut that section of the hedge, paint the fence (getting bits of leylandii down the front of my shirt and fence paint all over my person in the process), and move the compost bin back into position.

All that remains now is to turn all the material out of the other compost bin, into the one I've just emptied and repeat the whole process. Once that is done, I can finally dispose of the big pile of sweet corn and squash/pumpkin plants, which is what I originally set out to do this morning.
