Just got back from Wilcos. I needed more compost and seeding compost. Also bought 12 Fuchsias and 6 verbenas all as very small plants but they look to be in good condition. Also came away with 4 large rectangular planters at £4.50 each. 100 plant labels and essential logs for wood burner. It's freezing out there so having a coffee then will put burner on in garden and start planting. I have spare fleece so they will be covered. Also have to re-plant strawberries that were dug up yesterday. I know it's going to be cold but one must get on.

Gave the corylus contorta a prune this afternoon after the frost has gone. That tree can put up a good fight but it still lost out to the secateurs eventually. Looking good now and the catkins are forming now.
Organised all the chick poop, autumn lawn feed tubs and moving stuff about in the metal shed in readiness for the spring. :)

Well, it was cold out there but fired up log burner, got prepared and got stuck in. I finished off levelling of grass area no. 2 and topsoiled. Put new veg containers in place that were bought earlier. Filled and improver added. Questions in desperate thread to follow. Ha ha!
Changed my mind on planting out plug plants in above thread. Have decided to (and started to) re- pot them into 3 inch pots and place in cold frame and recently made polythene greenhouse. Will monitor progress between the two.

Feeling so much better for the fact that I've made a start.

I was careful and put a knee brace on, don't want to go back on the crutches but chuffed. Got the greenhouse gutted.

Took all the roof panels off and scrubbed them and did my best to deal with the green gunk that grows inside the channels(poly carbonate). Scrubbed down the inside and all the shelving etc.

It's all back together ready for me to start planting up.

Veg beds have been dug over and fed.

Flower bed at the new fence has been assessed (Mrs A is not happy, neighbour was less than careful when he put the new fence in and some of the plants are damaged or gone).

New fence will hopefully get painted today but I've woken up to a hell of a frost this morning.

Generally in a good head space though, got started.

@WeeTam It depends how big your corylus is, but some years ago we removed all the lower branches. This allowed us to plant underneath it and gave us another large area of bed. :blue thumb:

Also, the trunk looks quite effective. :)

We shape ours every couple of years. We need a ladder and a big hedge cutter to do it!

Taking advantage of the past weeks dry weather to dig over the vegetable beds, pruning the buddlejas and sowing some lettuce seed in the greenhouse.
Also the usual weeding and tidying up.

How old is the tree and do you get a lot of nuts @shiney? I love its knobbly knees :)
Not in the garden today but pottering with my seedlings, might pot on some and maybe sow cosmos and few more sweet peas as the others haven't popped up.. no date on packet so soaked them, nicked them and talked to them. Sure it's been 2 weeks now.. only things that haven't popped up!

Yes he does - usually around the end of May each year.
The knobbly knees are really one of our GC members who stood beside it for too long while Shy Knee was giving one of his "little" () talks and the trunk grew around the poor bloke
