Went around knocking snow of the laurel hedging , bamboos, palms, and rhodies so the branches on some dont break with the weight of snow&ice if it freezes tonight.
Had to lift my treeferns and bring them I to the garage, cant risk freeze killing them off again.

Nothing done in the garden today, but I did take the opportunity this afternoon to spend an hour or so cleaning, oiling and sharpening the secateurs, loppers and hand shears ready for another season. I even managed to do it without injuring any fingers this year. :phew:

Seed order arrived this morning, all checked, present and correct. :)

I had the rare opportunity of having a hire car today, so took the day off work and did three runs to the garden centre for allotment equipment: canes, lots of manure and a new wheelbarrow.

I also pruned the existing grape vine and moved the maiden whip apple trees into position for stepover apple trees. I chopped them right down to a couple of buds too. Scary but necessary for the right height. Just hoping I definitely have them in the correct position now! :D

Rain called off play yet again, so browsing newly arrived seed catalogue Mr. Fs was as close as I got to doing actual gardening today, was v pleasant though for all that.

Cleared loads of dead leaves from strawberry patch, potted up some raspberry canes, split some logs and shredded the Christmas tree!

What's pine compost good for? Presumably any ericaceous plants?

                - cut back remaining perennials and mulched flower bed today with rotted manure
                - cleared up all of the old stakes and canes and put away
                - started cleaning up pots ready for propagating
                - soaking sweet pea seeds to sow on heated propagator tomorrow
                - shuffled seed packets longingly...

I'll remember that when I am looking out over a bitterly cold windswept garden , I can have an "economy of effort day !" :blue thumb: ( Wonder if that will work on my manager at the office ? )

The sun shine has given me the hint of better weather to come, so, I've been making hangers for the brackets.
Sometimes it is quite nice to just "look" at the garden; its given me an idea for finally potting up the lollipop bay trees I was given as a gift over a year ago :heehee: I've got the bays, I've got the pots, I've got the companion plant ... now, I just need Mr "M" to have a day off so he can move the heavy pots into position and then I can plant up

Reassembled my plastic coldframe, washed it, just checkedit and its frozen solid. Still everything in thd garden is either iced up or has a covering of snow onit. Garlic have been in the garage for a few days now but need the light so out they go tomorrow with mulching.

My impatience got the better of me and I manoeuvred the pot myself ( :phew: ) and planted it up  It felt good to be out there and *doing* instead of staring and *thinking* :pathd:

Broke the ice on the tops of the butts and split a few coreopsis - bit mad in this arctic weather, but think I need to do a bit of gardening. A few recces into the shed for a bit of a clean up but venture smartly curtailed by seized fingers. Retreated indoors to bake and look at winter mini-break options in sunnier climes.
