What jobs are we doing in the garden today 2016

With a break of an hour or so for a family visit I've spent most of the day in the greenhouse potting on seedlings. I've already covered 8 x 3ft of shelving in pots and trays and there's still trays of seedlings growing indoors in various places. Each year I think I've over done it but surprisingly they all disappear fairly easily into the beds when it comes to planting out.

I can't honestly remember the last time I had such a lovely day (maybe last time I had a rain free garden day!! ) I've got so much done in the garden & I have to say I'm pleased with how it's all coming along , I finished cleaning the greenhouse, dug some of the veggie patch, cleared out some pots, cleaned the patio, my shed entrance patio & had a general tidy up .
I've blocked up Mr Rat-a-tat-tats big hole he's dug under the greenhouse do I can establish if he's still visiting or not, the trap is set along the coal box but it's not gone off, I can clearly see his way in is along the coal box, under the fence & in the greenhouse...I shall get him
I've spent the evening playing with my Kitchen Aid mixer it's brilliant , I've made a Victoria sponge, cup cakes & some choc chip cookies (I have family coming tomorrow ).
I'm now left with just one section of the garden which is a bit of a mess, mainly caused by a heap of logs & some of hubby's cr@p that all needs to be sorted, the wood needs splitting & the cr@p needs to go to the tip or I need a skip! , I shall get that sorted out very soon!

There's no sign of anything in the greenhouse this morning, hopefully whatever it was has gone on his jolly way!

 

Goodness gracious me the wind is so strong here, we've got a very wobbly fence, one fence panel is totally knackered & several posts are loose. With kev's help we've secured it....all I can say is thank goodness for hubby's pile of cr@p , we've used some of the planks of wood off the pile to wedge up the posts & make a temporary mend in the panel .
The hens are all in the greenhouse except from Buttercup she's still in the coop she's frightened poor dear .
I hope you are all ok & no one has any damage.

I only have time to water the seedlings as I must get lots of work done today. Tomorrow the sun shines and I don't want to be working when the sun is shining

 

Made a willow screen to cover the compost bag.

 

Spent the day going to the tip with bags of rubble and bringing home bags of compost. Still a fair bit needed to help tame this clay soil but I feel some progress has been made. Yay

 

I've been sorting out the greenhouse overvthe last few days, starting by putting mouse traps down (caught 21 so far, that's what you get with a greenhouse next to a chicken run). Got the propane gas heating going, including essential maitenance like removing 50mm of gas hose at each end and reconnecting, otherwise it's prone to peridhing at the ends and I'll lose best part of a 19kg cylinder, or have a gas leak next to the heater (that's very scary).

My indoor light box, etc., had reached full capacity, so putting on greenhouse heating couldn't be delayed any longer, and to make the most of it I've washing pots, cell trays & seed trays and sowing stuff all day. As I don't use my greenhouse for any summer growing, just to produce plants for open ground or polytunnels, it tends to get all sorts of stuff dumped in it over summer and needs a really big sort out in spring. Greenhouse lightbox goes active shortly.

Only about one more day's sowing to finish what's programmed for this month, then it's onto April's sowings.

 

Cleared several barrowloads of soil from the area between the chicken run and the new fence, it's good rich soil so all tipped on to the veg plots.

I've started planting a few bits and pieces in there already, all free stuff as well.

There are two Buddleias, which are rooted cuttings I took when I pruned my large Buddleia last year. I've also planted a couple of Guelder Rose and one native dogwood, these are good sized sucker plants which I've lifted from next to the parent plants I already have in the garden.

I also planted three small holly seedlings which I lifted from elsewhere in the garden, these are always popping up around the place thanks to the birds.

Did a little pruning and shredding after that to finish off the day.

 

Not been very busy today

Started cutting down the Fuchsias that have been kept growing over the Winter and taken about 70 cuttings from them.
Taken cuttings from Salvia Coral Nymph that has been living on my bedroom windowsill.
Sowed a few seeds.....

Not that busy really.

 

Had to replace a piece of guttering which has disappeared, so whilst I had the ladders out I cut back the tree that was catching the roof further over. Sorted the thicker branches out and will use these in the chicken run as roost and will make a log pile behind the greenhouse with the rest. Shredded all the other branches and put on compost. Then went to pick up the greenhouse glass I was gifted on Freecycle. Only trouble was it was 4 foot long so had to fold seat s down to get it in. It looks like it all made home in one piece though, measured up and it is too small width ways so will need to cut it. Hopefully I can get it all in this week and start using the greenhouse.
