What jobs are we doing in the garden today 2016

An interesting time in the 'green room' today.
Only went out to sit in the arbour with Mr "M" to have a cuppa ... from that view, I noticed just how lovely the primroses in the shady patch looked (took a photo).
After Mr "M" had disappeared indoors I took another look at the primrose patch ... ... ...


... out come the spade, the garden fork, the trowel, the hand fork, the slow release fertilizer and ... the Fur Monster (who promptly sat on my spade and wouldn't budge! )

I moved the two euonymus (which I'd planned to do anyway, but other things had taken precedence). One, the silver queen, to a deep pot next to the back door and will give a lovely, year round, display of greenery and the other ... just a few inches backwards in that bed so it will spill into, and over, the join from garden to patio. A couple of primroses were moved so that they can form the "border" twix bed and lawn.

Now I have quite a gap in that bed which I will need to fill I hear the local Nursery calling my name

At the same time, I carefully pulled up all the bulbs I recognised as the invaders: Spanish Bluebells I'm not going to even bother deporting them ... they are going straight into the BIN! Some I only managed to get the greenery and not the bulb, so I think I have a few years battle on my hand with those.

Watered the border where I had transplanted primroses et al and the border I planted the other week and the border with the wildflower seeds in it
One hour later .... we had a downpour!

The final half hour of "green room" time, Mr "M" joined me (and, lucky for his sake, he brought me a cuppa!) and we sat and admired just how very different the whole area looks from when we first viewed it almost two years ago (give or take a week). He really could not see my "vision" of how we could make our stamp on it; slowly, but surely, I'm getting there and now he is getting a hint of how it will (eventually) take shape
Good job too! Because his next weekend off ...


















... I have another big border to be dug, manured, planted and mulched ... and I'm not doing that entirely alone

Hi, more work done on what was a wild part of the garden last year, more work to do here but the worst part is done.

I've also patched the grass up here, the rest should knit up in a month or so.

 

Picked up a barrow load of bits from under the silver birch tree, dug out docks, nettles, buttercup, celandine, teasels, from the herbaceous order and spread a couple of barrows of old wood chippings under the magnolia in the middle of the bed.

 

Late last night I sowed seeds in trays for broccoli and purple sprouting broccoli, and kale. I also sowed some seeds of wild ginger Arasum europaeum which I'm excited about as an unusual shade ground cover.

With the weather misbehaving again I spent time in the greenhouse potting on seedlings. I've also taken the chance and moved the last of the seedlings indoors out there. With some chilly nights still on the cards I hope they're strong enough to cope.

 

Potted up 130 Cyclamens, load of Sweet Violents, Eringiums and sowed some more Yellow Horned Poppies and Manx Marvels.

 

Did you start the Cyclamens from seed?

 

No, they were self seeded, just grubbed them up and put them in tray's overwinter, Tray was furious

Painted one of my indoor flower pots tonight. Trying to get the shabby chic look. It appears to have kinda worked

We've been away for a week, but thanks to a friend and neighbour the greenhouse and windowsill seedlings were all kept watered. Today I gave most things a feed and just ambled around really. Delighted to see two shoots on my trillium which last year had only 1. Might get a flower this year, who knows! It was amazing how much everything had grown in just a week.
