Today I dotted a few bulbs about. Somewhere in there are daffodils, crocuses and snowdrops. I then sprinkled a modest layer of multipurpose compost across the top. For good measure I covered the whole thing with a layer of bark chippings. Finally I watered it all in. (At least I will have done by the time anyone reads this)

I have no idea if I have done it right or not. I shall have to wait and see what appears in the spring. At the least it will look considerably better than it did.

    G.

Ps. If all goes to plan, this should become a raised bed by this time next year. Don't hold me to that though.

AH just realised why you mentioned runner beans! I actually meant new strawberry plants from the runners-are you supposed to do that every year?

Every 2 years for me but no more than 3 years....strawberry plants quickly deteriorate after that. Simply peg the runners down .....now is good, summer is better....and sever from the main plant in spring. Pot up or plant out.
Ha ha, wondered myself how the jump went to runner beans :)

Are you still meaning strawberry runners? If so, then yes, you do it every year :blue thumb:
It'll work, but, just so you know: the whole purpose of putting the bark chips on top is to *hold* the moisture that is in the soil and slow down any evaporation; trap in the summer heat for as long as possible and, allegedly, keep weeds down. So, for future reference, water your bed thoroughly *before* laying down the chips. Not an issue that you did it differently though.

Only popped out into the garden to enjoy a cuppa in the sunshine (famous last words!) and ended up:
              • moving the Japanese Anemone - only a foot to the left, but it looks far better in that spot
              • dug up a rose from the border which runs left to right in my garden to replant it in a position nearer to the patio - couldn't smell it all the way down there, but where it is now it should smell divine when we're on the patio having a Pimms next year :heehee:
              • under planted the rose with Clematis "Guernsey Cream". It was struggling where it was before and thought it would look stunning twinning up the rose.
              • moved the large tub containing an amelanchier lamarckii to the left hand side of the garden just in front of my "Cola" sign and, even if I say so myself, it looks much, much better there! When it bursts into white star shaped flowers in the Spring, I'll see it through the kitchen door window now :blue thumb: Hopefully, next year it will be planted in a permanent position, so it doesn't hurt to move it around to see where it looks best.
              • gave the bamboo plants a good trim - bought them on the cheap/sale table a couple of weeks ago and I'm nurturing them back to health (hopefully!). Not a huge investment in money terms so I won't break my heart if they don't pick up. However, they are looking much more attractive since the day I bought them, so something must be going right :heehee:
              • Gave all the newly transplanted plants a good watering so they shouldn't sulk for too long.
              • Never having achieved my water feature this year, Mr "M" and I had a discussion on where I'd like it installed NEXT year  The seed has been planted! I'll leave it until Spring for the idea to take root in his brain ;) :heehee:
              • Moved some of the young plants in pots to a more sheltered position for over Winter
              • Sprinkled some Borage seeds on the warm soil in a bare area; saved some for sowing another lot in the Spring

Made fresh cuppa and sat back to take stock once more :coffee:

A beautiful day here in Cornwall. Family came and it was hot. Fun and relaxing :) made me realise I want a bigger pond so it is now on my winter to do list:)
this time it will be raised to incorporate some seating.
Have we a pond and water feature thread here? ....must investigate:)

Only issue with wood Verdun its hard work keeping it looking nice, I did put a membrane to keep the wood dry but it still gets wet,

If money was no object I would have used stone, in the near future I will clad it in this, good luck with it I will follow your progress with interest :).
