      Yesterday I bought a pot of 5 bush runner bean plants......I didn't know there was any such thing! They're called Hestia and are to grow in pots. They should produce lots of runner beans with straight pods 7 - 8 inches long. So today I put them in individual 4 inch pots to see what happens. I'm guessing they'll have to go in bigger pots again as they grow into...bushes.... they were from greengrocers, not garden centre....

        They're tender perenials, so if you keep them in pots you can overwinter them indoors :)

          Oooooh....that's worth knowing thank you. I was planning on trying to save seed. What size pots should they finish up in / overwinter in please?

            I'd go for a 5 litre pot, they don't have huge root systems, but will need a liquid feed during the season, not a high nitrogen one as the roots have nodules that fix nitrogen from the air :)

            Just somewhere frost free to overwinter, too warm and they'll keep growing :yikes:

              I haven't been able to turn over the Compost Heap for several years

              due to it being inhabited by Bee colonies and my 3 Hedgehogs who seem to find the warmth of it very pleasant. But that doesn't stop me adding to it almost every day:snorky:

                  Took a car load of excavated rubble, wire and garden cuttings to the recycling centre this morning.

                  Spent and hour or so uncovering this

                  From my 'secret garden ' plot. I was digging another hole to see how far the rubble extended and hit the slate tiles. Looks like pathway has been laid, suggesting that the land may have been configured differently at some time in the past and there may have been a building at the end of the path. Difficult to say for sure as there is so much rubble dumped there. Roger cut part of the hedges with the petrol hedge cutter.

                  Whilst digging I disturbed a Toad :sad:. It was underneath the raised bit of slate at the top of the picture. I didn't know it was there, lucky it wasn't injured or killed. Stopped digging immediately.

                    Potting up, potting up, lunch, potting up , potting up..:)...... tidied up the awful mess I had made :sad:. Then dashed around madly moving out plant pots so as to catch some long awaited ..rain:biggrin:

                      That's Jenny with her own Cat Ladder to climb onto the Heap. She has a tendency to get into some situations and then look at me as though it's my fault!

                      This is Sally who only has one eye and is the oldest of the two, the Alpha Cat of the two, and she will let Jenny know it now and then although she's only half the size and weight of Jenny.

                      Neither cats, lucius, bother the birds and, in fact, the Black Birds will bully them into moving out of the way, and the only birds they don't allow in the garden are Magpies. Both the cats and the Hedgehogs ignore each other when the Hedgehogs amble through the borders or across the lawn.:snorky:

                          @JJ28 Hestia make a colourful display and can crop reasonably well as long as they don't dry out.

                          You need to pot them into at least a five litre pot for good cropping. This is because beans need a lot of water and the bigger pots retain the moisture better. Unlike beans that are in the ground which need a very heavy watering two to three times a week, you will need to water them more often during hot weather. If you find that the plant starts to trail the leaf or bean onto the ground then place the pot on top of another, inverted, pot in order to raise it higher.

                            @Zigs thanks for sending the rain instead of bringing it :dbgrtmb:. You must have sent it first class :snork:. The only problem was that they spilled a lot of it on the way :sad: but the plants look happier. :)

                              Rearranging the greenhouse for summer running. Potting up seedlings. Then if the rain stops I have some things to go in outside. Also weeding, deadheading.
