WHAT JOBS ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2017

Did nothing! currently on dog/house sitting duties so away from home.

Finished planting everything in the back garden cannas, hedychiums and got the ensete in.
Stained the patio furniture but needs another coat.
Just got the front to plant up now, on the plus side the weather looks good for next week Would do I'm back at work

 

Planted out eight sweet peppers in the greenhouse; four red ones (Beauty Bell) and four orange ones (Kubista). I haven't tried Kubista before so it will be interesting to see how they perform.

Scattered some Italian basil seed in the soil around the tomatoes and peppers in the greenhouse, it grows quite happily in between the plants and seems to help deter pests too.

Sowed some more spring onions in the veg patch.

Sprayed some of the broad beans and lupins with a liquid derris mixture, as a few aphids have appeared.

Watered and fed all the pots and containers.

 

Well, didn't do much today apart from make a 2 metre extension to the patio flower bed .

Not really planned, but yesterday we decided that the Charles de mills rose was really unhappy in its pot. So thought about a new place to put it....

Today I extended the patio bed, making a retaining wall for the top of the steep slope, out of the removed turfs. Digging a hole to plant the rose was difficult - rock hard clay (the only part of the garden with clay), with all sorts of debris buried in it. We found paving slabs, bricks, stones, tiles, stop-taps, tarred roofing felt, and even insulated earthing cables! We decided to move another rose from the back of the existing bed, as it had not thrived in the past 5 years. When I lifted it I found that only 2 roots had left the planting hole!! So the poorly rose was put to the front (Winchester cathedral), with Charlie to the back. Other herbaceous perennials dotted in between, though there will be gaps for the first year...

I know not the best time to move roses - we have put cable tidy tubing in to direct water down to the roots.
You can see how long it took by the reduced lighting levels!
Because the bank is relatively unstable, I decided not to dig over the whole area, but just the planting holes. This is in the hope that the solid clay block will hold together more!

 

After a cold wet miserable spring, we are finally at the point that plants can go in the garden. Today I planted the aubergine that has been growing in the greenhouse into raised beds along with a few pepper plants. The plants are Black Beauty started from seed about six weeks ago. Prior to placing the plants in the ground, I hardened them off for three days by placing them outdoors on the deck during the day.

 

Put dahlias in pots, moved them and lillies round the front. Planted out cosmos sensation and ladybird, catananche caerulea, 2 different rudbeckia in the front and back. 2 small hanging baskets and few pots with begonias, 2 hanging baskets and 2 pots with trailing geraniums, fuschias, petunia and lobelia. Still got cerinthe, daylillies, asiatic lillies, antirrhinum, more phlox, more dahlias, petunias, lobelia, gladioli, ricinus, mirablis jalapa and some other things to plant. They need to go in by tomorrow.. no idea where Still haven't packed for my holiday

 

We've had another hot day here. The transplanted roses are holding up well, with no leaf droop, although a few flower buds are a little droopy...

 

Watered the greenhouse and veg beds. And I have started to notch out the posts for the new compost bins.

Mowed the lawn, watered the lawn and borders, went and bought two cucumber plants and planted them up, they looked happy in the late afternoon sun in their new home,

Reading up its best to take the flowers/veg from the first four nodes, i will do that tomorrow
