WHAT JOBS ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2017

Watched the rain yesterday. Watching the rain today. It's currently 15 degrees, so warmer than yesterday, so it's feeling like a proper west of Scotland summer today!

Hoiked/hoikked is a word used up here too.

 

Today, I have invested a periodic half hour, or four, reaping the rewards of my labours: I've sat on my (recently painted and moved) bench and admired the fruits of my labours.
Looking to the left of me I have clematis Arabella entwined with rose "Golden Showers", plus, of course, the length of the garden in its splendour showcasing daylilies, cornflowers, roses, campanulas, honeysuckles, heucheras', to name but a few, together with, all the other bounties ... erm ... ... a-bounding )Swiss chard, tomatoes, potatoes, courgette, beans (numerous varieties), strawberries, loganberries, tayberries, gooseberries; herbs: bronze fennel, rosemary, peppermint, chocolate mint, pineapple mint, bay, chives; Jerusalem artichokes "in-a-bag" (thank you @shiney land)

Sometimes, I think it *is* our "job" (as gardeners) to actually sit a while, peruse the surroundings, ignore any tasks which may spring to mind, taking time to drink in the wonder of it all and simply: be!

I feel content with what I have. I've noted where I can improve/jobs to be done but I've also savoured the fruits of my labours and felt ... ... at peace with nature and myself! I so love that feeling!!

So, do not forget to sit a while, enjoy, reflect and just ... BE!! You've worked year round for that privilege, so ... enjoy! Guilt free

 

What a lovely post, and very timely for all the hard working gardeners, especially those struggling with the heat. You paint a beautiful picture of your garden with words, and make me feel almost as if I am sitting on that bench too!

There's the old anecdote about a city teacher starting at a Somerset country primary school, she wanted to know what level her new class's maths was at so she asked them simple questions.

When she asked one lad what 10 minus 3 was he looked puzzled, so she put it different.

"What if you had 10 cows and you took 3 of them away?"

Well I am Lincolnshire lass so I'm surprised I've not heard it!

Totally agree with that....love having a wander and also sitting with a tea/wine and enjoying it

Not so mich today though as migraine struck again and it's pelting down out there! Yay!

 

I made 7 gallons of tea wine when I was at school, it tasted awful..

I was just tipping it away when a mate came round and said he'd take a gallon on.

A year later, I had some wine round his place that was lovely, you'm guessed it, it was the tea wine, needs a year for the tannin to settle down

Still raining here. Love the sound of the rain. Got a cup of tea and a cozy hoody on! No watering the garden or the lotty today - yay!

Hmm tea wine - now that is my kind of drink lol

 

Went up to the lotty this morning after reading shiney's post....courgettes have grown but no where near ready...hopefully when in back home on Saturday after visiting mum they will be ready

Cut a big vase full of sweet peas and did some dead heading with my new felco snips that arrived this morning

Spent some time in the greenhouse tidying the tomato plants up.

Late afternoon I've got my three big throughs of heuchera and trimmed them right back and sprayed them to get rid of a fungus/mildew that had started on them.also watered them with seasol seaweed feed as recommended by plantagogo heuchera peeps.

Had a lot of fungi/mildew this year....had to chop back/spray three lupins with white mildew....they had been looking really healthy and it came on suddenly. Very annoying-anyone else had mildew etc more this year?
