Another stint at local horticultural college showing folks with learning difficulties some gardening methods :) Why is it the most "difficult" are also the most endearing? :yay:
          Planted a terrarium too

Even though you put difficult in speech marks, it doesn't come off well.

Anyways.. The weatherman lied. It's been drizzling all day, thankfully it was dry yesterday so I managed to clean the chooks out.. but that was all I had done. Came down with some stomach bug in the afternoon and not been right since :frown:

            Didn't know that!

This has been happening to me this year too, my heads not in the game like it was. Although I'm managing to keep up with the allotments, my garden has become a dumping ground yet again. And I think the main reason is that I want (and need) the wall done out of the way, sounds petty right!? But if the wall is in it means I can plant out the trees I have in pots, move the coop to the back and not have peeping Toms so I can actually get on..etc but saying that I think @ARMANDII 's advice is brilliant, its something I needed to hear actually so thank you :dbgrtmb: - one bit a time - thankfully/hopefully I have time on my side.
Just don't rush it @luciusmaximus , do it for your own pleasure and no else's :grphg:

              More digging and shoveling today.

              20171026_170313.jpg

I am continuing to remove all the soil. What you can see in the picture is the clay base.

I noticed whilst out and about today, a field where the clay had been ploffed with the soil. Is it in my best interest to do this with mine?

              20171026_170401.jpg

I have started to uncover the roots from the established tree. I said I wouldn't disturb them but I can't see how I can re use that area if I don't. I also found lots of corms among these roots. Where do they come from? Do they drop or do they grow in the ground? I am clearing them away as I find them.

              G.

Ps I apologise for the current picture quality. My phone doesn't take very good photos in low light.

Doing well Gary :).....that base, can you loosen it a little with the fork too?
"Corms"? Could they be montbretia? Worth picking out as many as possible if so.
Spoiled here in comparison.....good, rich sandy loam easily dug and worked but your soil will be so much easier in future :)
Great satisfaction when all done though :)

I agree with Verdun about gravel making the area look better and it would help partially with the weed problem but, with apologies to Verdun, obviously it won't help with the drainage problem but merely hide it, and if there's enough water and rain you'll get water appearing between the gravel so you also might need a retaining edge to keep the gravel in the area where you want it to stay and also help you get enough depth of gravel. What gravel won't do is deter any weed roots already in the graveled area as they will merely push through the gravel. Also gravel, while being a good choice, will shelter windblown weed seeds and debris will which help the seeds to grow among the gravel. So, unfortunately, you will, on any kind of mulch, need to keep a constant eye out for those weed seedling that will inevitably appear. It's one of the perpetual problems that we gardeners get.:dunno::wallbanging::snorky:

It certainly doesn't help to be near fields and hedges, lucius, the nearest fields to me are about 400 yards away. Weed seeds come in via the wind, rain clouds, birds etc. Some seeds can be blown in from a hundred miles, or more, away and that's without taking into account any neighbours who might not bother about the state of their gardens.:gaah::heehee: I do grow Nettles, in places where visitors can't be stung, for the Butterflies and Caterpillars but I think Dandelions are a very prolific weed and are easily available to insects for food, Daisies get eradicated as I gave up making Daisy Chains a long time ago:heehee:, and Thistles?.......well, I grow at least 4 or 5 of the "domesticated" varieties and the Bees, etc love them!!:snorky:

I proposed a mound covered with gravel ARMANDII but I still think the more this is overthought the more daunting the problem seems and the less likely resolved  I sorted a wet spot with an application of ordinary gravel ......an entrance to a garden shed was always muddy; now it is dry and clean.

Totally unrelated bits of info.....yep, clocks go back this weekend and then I accept summer is really over:sad:
The world's potentially fastest car was tested today in Cornwall. Along with our space programme ambitions will England manage to keep up with us?:rasp:

Thanks, BH, I must admit I do enjoy an amble around the garden stopping off at various places to sit with a mug of tea, and contemplate what's going on in the borders, shrubs and down by the Wildlife pond.
You're right, the greater percentage of plants are chosen for insect friendly virtues but they do give me and any visitors smiles on our faces. Friends and visitors have suggested that I have an Open Day but, since I'm still working at least 3 days a week for HM, I find the time I have to myself and the garden are precious. Plus, my garden is an overplanted, informal, slightly chaotic, Cottage style with narrow paths where plants and shrubs will brush against you as you amble down them, and not one that is neatly trimmed, formal, and manicured.
Some visitors, who haven't been before, tend to veer towards the Observatory and then the Garden:heehee:
Anyway, thank you for the compliments and I'm always glad it pleases friends other than me and the Cats.:coffee::smile:
