WHAT JOBS ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2018

Back from the beach where it is warm and the only sound was that of the waves. Set up nicely for plenty of work in the garden including cutting grass which is growing apace now.
A glorious day in prospect.....wall to wall sunshine hopefully

 

@Verdun sounds idyllic, it's cloudy and drizzly here :(

 

No gardening today. It's been raining all day . I've also had plenty of work which is probably just as well. I had my usual wander around and came across primula Wanda. They look like smaller, neater primroses. I have read that they like acidic soil. I was thinking of growing one or two in my rockery to add some much needed colour. Any thoughts?

Ponds looking very nice Luci.

 

No Gary....primula wanda thrives in most decent, moisture retentive soil. Doesnt require acidic soil. Spreads well and is a good "doer" . I divide clumps most years
Yellows are good with blue campanulas as are reds. Check out euryops pectinata.....sulphur yellow flowers forever, silver/grey/green evergreen foliage

 

Cut the lawns for the first time this year and cleaned the greenhouse out ready for plants and seeds.

All in all, a productive day

 

I spent a bit of time in my "low maintenance" garden.
Had to replace the Montana in the big tub by our front door. It was doing OK showing some new growth, but that week of freezing weather put paid to it and another out of three we have.

Decided to bin our little olive tree in a tub, never did much and was taking up space on the small patio. But the Morello Cherry and Conference pear we have there in their tubs are budding up well.

Did a bit of weeding, mowing, blowing and sweeping up. Four hours it took!

 

Third Phostrogen feed of the year and the garden is looking a little happier for it already. Off to a certain themepark in the north of the county tomorrow, with some rather spectacular gardens that will serve as inspiration.

Been out and about today , went GC this morning but rather disappointed didn't see anything I fancied, just picked up a dahlia tuber for the sake of getting something. Back home and washed the bike.

Pottered around the garden this afternoon / evening doing weeding / feeding / applying slug wool pellets around vulnerable plants. Tidied up all the clematis and mulched feed etc , give the roses some top rose and mulched and sorted out the rest of the lilys. Just got back in now after spiking the back lawn and top dressing , not ideal for top dressing at this time dew was starting to form on the grass making it harder to spread the top dressing, may have to do a quick brush / rake round tomorrow, I'll probably do a overseed while I am at it.

Keep doing lots of jobs in the garden but it seems many other jobs keep coming.

 

This afternoon has been absolutely glorious here too . Warm enough for just a t- shirt, sunny and very calm. Birdies twittering away and Bees buzzing about . I think my weather has been as good as your Verdun .

Today, I planted out more grasses on the big mound and also some Verbena and Eryringium. I've got some more Aquilegias to put around the pond area but didn't get too it today.

I had a good look at the small mound and decided that drastic tactics were needed for the Docks. They've been blasted with stuff I really don't like using but sometimes needs must . I dug up most of the flowers that were there first. I have noticed when wandering around that there is a lot of Ragwort again and the Docks are just all over the place

Put in a few more plants along the new border in back garden - blue and white Scabiosa, Marguerite daisy. Also planted another Phlox over by the Willow and replanted the Snowdrops I dug up from the mound.

Prepared another of my baths so it ready for planting. I've removed most of what was in it but have left one Cottage Pink ( actually white ) and a pink Achillea. Can't decide what else to put in. Can't make up my mind with the other bath either. So far have got the Toadflax and a Thyme that were already there plus two Lithodoras and an Ivy.

Made two new ' tents ' for the buns using leftover pond liner and run panels. Moved one of the houses to a different location. Sat on pile of compost and bark chippings bags by the pond with a coffee ....... a bench might be nice .

 

. It's still a work in progress and I need a lot more slate, but it's taking shape gradually. With the sun on it for most of today the water looked even greener and scummier . Hopefully, it will resolve naturally as I don't want to use any chemicals.

Any luck with finding your new pond yet?

 

The slate looks very nice certainly soften the edges, without a UV filter you will get some green, is it the water that's green or algae below the surface Lucy,

Mine is algae below the surface if it starts getting out of control i have a fine mesh net i fish it out with, the water is very clear,


Getting lots of birds using my pond as a watering hole now Luci , my arm chair faces the patio door i can view any visitors that comes,

No luck with the pond yet i am looking everyday but in no rush i have lots to do, decided to do more work at the top of the garden the skip is only half full so might as well get the garden more level, i know theirs more rubble there as i put it there then put conifers on top .
