I’ve been offered this Dicksonia on condition I dig it up, it’s bern in the ground 10 years or so, I know they grow from the top and when they are cut for retail their sawn from the base and root from there but, Do I cut as round and as deep as possible to collect pre existing root or will it be predominantly trunk under ground? I’ve planted a few but never dig up... any help would be most welcome.

Hi CraigET last year I repotted my dicksonia and since it was in the biggest tub I could manage, I just used a pruning saw to slice off a few inches of the root ball at the bottom and take some slices off the side, to leave room for some actual compost. The pot was just a complete mass of fibres, and it didn't seem to harm it at all afterwards. So I suspect when you dig down you will just find a fibrous mass. However that one looks magnificently large, so you may have a lot of digging to get enough out, and may have to take a saw to it too. Lovely specimen!

I have 50- 60 Starlings in my garden daily. They make a huge mess everywhere and eat ridiculous amounts of food.

@Perki - I'll have a go at pollinating the flowers when they blossom. It's the first year I've had any flowers so may as well experiment:smile:

I've been very impressed with your labours.

However, I've been following this thread for several days now, looking at the photos and the progress you've made. But it's been glaringly apparent from the beginning, that those two fellas in the pointy hats at the end of the garden have done sod-all to help!

Good God @ARMANDII that's a bit harsh [IMG]....I brought a squirrel trap where you can release them a distance away much better plus I've not had one for the last two years.

I think I've made the breed here distinct having one every other day

Wind gusting at 60 mph today, cold, grey and misty. Definitely not a garden day. Apart from venturing forth to keep birdies topped up with food that is.
