Busy elsewhere today but just back from a dip in the sea. Hope I'm not being over sensitive but I sensed some comic reaction to my new red and white (england footie) mankini. People can be so unkind :noidea:
        Refreshing breeze today.....nice ! :dancy:

Lawns to cut later, a plant delivery due and some watering.:)

After consulting with a neighbour and t'internet, we decided the palm trees in the back garden have both bought it. Like the cordyline in the front garden, clearly the extreme temperature we saw over winter got to them. We gave the palm trees every chance to turn themselves around but they've gotten worse rather than better.

Bought a buxus topiary spiral to replace one (and match the buxus spiral at the other end of the garden) and will use the other pot for a mix of bulbs and flowers we grow in the greenhouse.

I lost a Washingtonia Palm to the "Beast from the East" but my Cordylines were both unaffected. I think if the sub zero conditions had been say around two days the Palm would have survived, but it was a really prolonged period of over a week and that was the Killer.:dunno::wallbanging:

It was the bitter winds that got a couple of mine. One of them had lived through the -20c of 2010 but this winter it got fried.

I discovered today that some of my plants under the Cherry tree have been damaged more than I thought by Storm Hector. At the time I thought I'd lost one Erigeron and one Lavender. Today I touched the remaining Lavender and it fell apart in my hands and another one of the Erigerons has given up . I guess the heat after the wind hasn't helped either. So, I spent this afternoon sorting out the planting bed.

I find stuff like this the most frustrating as it means having to redo something which was already completed. And, I didn't have time to do what I had planned to do, so that job will get shunted to tomorrow and tomorrow's jobs to another day :gaah:. Can't stop the power of nature :dunno:

That's what I mean you was pleased about that area and sorting it and to find more disaster because of the weather is enough to knock your neck in...Lucius it's been one funny year mate...a bad winter and now an over extreme summer of heat...plants are being watered now more than they've ever been done :dunno:

That's a shame lucius :) disappointing, frustrating and disheartening. I'm sure you will find something else to grow that will thrive in those places.
If I lose something I always try to work out why.....is it the soil, is it in the wrong place, a pest, disease, etc.? I usually manage, eventually, to get to the bottom of it :) As Gail said, it has been a "funny" year and plants have had to adapt to quite extreme conditions :noidea:

One thing I do know is that my Clematis has gone mental in this sunshine and heat, its put on a lot of height more than it has ever done before....I survived Storm Hector as my garden is surrounded by conifer hedging...My Betula utilis ‘Jacquemontii did blow over in its large tree pot but was put upright after the storm.....prompting me to perhaps dig a big hole at the end of July lol

Before and after. Admittedly it's not the best time of day to be taking that shot but I won't be here to do it later.

The darker shed has been painted on 3 sides. The lighter one so far on just the front. It's definitely made a difference.
