These Celariac and parsnips are desperate to be planted out but we will lose them in this heat and all our tunnel cloches are being used to stop the greens dieing over at the lottie

Defying the Ban Day 6
Our local swimming pool seem to be taking this water shortage malarkey a bit too seriously they've just announced that they are closing lanes 7 and 8 until further notice :roflol:

I'm getting sick of sweeping up the border pathways after the birds have been diggin...suppose its my fault for attracting them into the garden in the first place lol... Tomatoes are starting to turn red....and everything is blooming marvelous....Just about to put my balaclava on again and head out onto the frontline to sprinkle the grass......

Hi @BigC , what has closing two lanes gotta do with the water shortage? Surely the pool still needs to be at the same level.

Not so much what I have done today but more in the past few weeks
We moved about 10 months ago into our bungalow, and it is surrounded by trees all the way around the plot, these are mainly conifers that have been cut down to 6ft to form a hedge, apart from the hedges there was not one plant or a shrub in the front or back garden
So we had the hedges and a few other diseased trees chopped down in late May, there
were 42 trees planted at a meter apart, once the trees were chopped down the trunks were removed or they used a stump grinder on the ones where the trunks couldn't be removed.
After the trees had gone we were left with a mountain of saw dust everywhere and if you dug into the ground the fork just bounced back where the ground was so hard
Then spent the new two weekends and every evening after work for 3 hours every night for 10 nights in clearing all the roots etc :mute:
it was a matter of breaking the soil up (which was rock hard) and removing all the roots, some I managed to use a hand axe and some were so big that I had to use the reciprocating saw to cut away and remove the roots,
I managed to fill 5 wheelie bins with roots  but its been worth it as now you can dig the soil with a small hand fork and the soil is soft loam but I need to do a PH test :)
We have stables down our road so I plan to work some manure into the soil, but the good news is that I am now left with a possible border that is 1.5m wide X 42m long which is south east facing so you tend to get about 8 hours of sun during the summer months :)
I managed to grab a few plants / cuttings from our old garden plus I have been buying a few over the past few months as well which are in our front garden with now looks like a garden centre :)

Once I have a bit more money then the wire fence is going to be replaced with a wooden fence with concrete posts (but being 42 meters long it wont come cheap) and then maybe next year tackle the hedges on the other side of the garden....don't mind any
planting scheme ideas if anyone has any suggestions :) :yay:

Lots of potential there Intel :), aren't you going to be having fun :). Do you have any ideas for what you want to achieve? What are your plans for the former pond? I would personally fill the pond with a very soft, natural style of planting and add a water feature so you have the sound of water.

                That's a good joke.:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Black birds will make a mess if the soil is soft. Is it where you've been watering?

I've had them mess up a tray of seedlings this time of year, had to cover them with fleece.

Intel......loads of potential there. Clean slate, space and fun with planning and planting :)

Nothing quite like starting a new garden:)

@intel We took out 22 x 40ft high Leyllandii, added compost and horse manure, watered well and five months later this is what we had

This morning I started again at 4.30 a.m. and did an hour of weeding, had a half hour break and then did another two hours of weeding. Had a quick breakfast and then did an hour and a half of mowing to tidy the main lawns up as we have visitors on Sunday (three dozen for dinner, tea and supper - with me cooking :phew:).

I then spent an hour erecting a Gazebo - and that's me done for the day.

Tomorrow someone is coming to help me put up a bigger Gazebo and put out tables and chairs :rolleyespink:

I thought of a lot of garden jobs today.....will end up just watering and picking blackcurrants. The beach called and it left me no time for gardening :snorky:

Mrs Shiney is doing the second watering today. I'll put the sprinkler on one of the beds that is gasping.

Well fed the birds this morning with their water as they're always waiting and watered plants that like some water during the day, they won't be watered tonight as they was done yesterday but we did fetch 5 bags of pea gravel...as fresh needs laying down on both sides by the fencing and across the decking and what's removed will be added to the front garden.

This is being done tomorrow evening...as i'm totally done in and drained :exhausted::fan:

Been quite lazy today, and a "lady that lunches", so not much got done. Just some essential watering of pots, harvesting (and passing on to a new home) of some courgettes, pegging out some washing, and deadheading the petunias and fuschias.

Oh, and some pond-gazing ... quite a bit of pond-gazing ... far more interesting than my navel, at any rate!!
