Hello C, I think if you trimmed it and kept it in shape it should be ok...unless you think something smaller needs to go in :)

Betula Jackmontii is quite quick growing but such a lovely tree and would be sad to just get rid of it. I'd take it in an instant (daughter's BF lives in NI and has various large arctics to transport said tree if you want shot of it:).
Seriously does the tree have to go so close to the neighbour's land? Not a spot more well inside your own garden? If that is a no then would it be an idea to speak with the neighbours and ask how they would view a fairly big tree overhanging their garden. You never know they might like the privacy angle.
I have a Silver Birch (not jackmontii)which is maybe 80 odd years old, It hasn't been trimmed as you can see:) but then I don't have neighbours so can let the trees do their own thing which is great.

Hello silu, we also have a Birch tree in our garden and the neighbour...they was so tall over the properties besides blocking the view...it was cut back and it's kept in shape 2-3 times yearly :)

Gosh Silu....sounds awful. Huge respect to you:). To go through what you did and still say you would stand up to the bullies is refreshing :)

Well. I am not as young as I used to be but, hopefully, have developed some methods to deal with this situation. I have always "sorted" issues, one way or another, when I feel it the right thing to do. My belief is that bullies are cowards and usually lack courage when challenged. We'll see:)
Besides, standing by and doing nothing is not my way:)

I'd really like to keep it to be honest and if you haven't pruned it in that amount of years @silu then I don't need to worry as I'll probably (most likely) be dead by then hahahaha in any case I'd be too old to climb up and snip a few branches :roflol:

Emptied and cleaned out two water butts, refilled with enough clean water to hold them in the wind and now fingers crossed that the weather forecast for tomorrow is right, began to pick up anything that might blow about. Tying up wind vulnerable plants.

I'll be out sweeping the yard as the rain and wind does bring down some crap and filling the bird baths as the birds rely on it :)...otherwise a nice relaxing weekend

Figured I'd make the most of it being slightly cooler and get the winter pansies started off in the greenhouse. Hopefully won't lose as many of those as we did the begonias earlier this year!

I've spent the last week getting the outside of the house and the garden ready for tomorrow's annual bbq. Up until yesterday teatime the weather had been sweltering. We bought a gazebo online to stand over the patio to offer some respite from the burning sun. Last night and this morning it rained. Since then it's been dry but the wind is gusting. The forecast looks the same for tomorrow. I'm not happy.

                    :gaah:

A few days back I treated my Box duck to a repotting.

It was by the collapsed fern wall and was still growing in the fallen soil for ages.
                        I totally neglected it.
When I put the new wall up I dug it up and put it in a trugg. There it stayed for weeks.

I finally potted it up and gave it a haircut.
