OK, I had one of those typical Selleri days which turn out to something totally unexpected. :snorky: This is how it went:

Decided to plant my newly identified (thanks GC!) Stinking Hellebore in the shady ivy corner. Whilst digging a planting hole, had a brilliant idea :ideaIPB: (Or, rather :runforhills: )

I'll dig a pond! Took a look around and saw a black builder's bucket- that's sorted then, I'll just sink that in the ground. A cute little pond-let in no time at all :)

Dug into the rock hard clay soil, found something which looked like foundations of a building. Played Indiana Jones and hoped to find mosaics or inscriptions in forgotten language. Realised that the bucket will not go in. Decided to call the rock corner a natural shelf and dag a natural pool instead.

No liner! No problem  Lined the pond with root membrane and two layers of heavy duty plastic refuse sacks. To my utter astonishment it's actually holding water [IMG]

The pond is in a bad place, only getting morning sun and will catch all fallen ivy and bramble leaves. I'll see how it goes and if I like it, buy a proper liner. I believe any pond will be welcome to the little critters and perhaps something else. We had a huge frog in our old place where we just had a large pot sunk in the soil.

Pictures to follow tomorrow provided that the water is still there. :snorky:

I admire your tenacity, your impulsiveness and your ability to think on your feet Selleri :)
You are right about a pond though; it provides a home for all sorts of friendly creatures......mine is too small so this winter will make something bigger and better :)
Not much in the garden except hedge trim escallonia Iveyii.....attractive white variety.

Try an old tyre @Selleri for a pond the size to suit your space..base with carpet and then insert your liner, Mine is for fish, but the frogs get in an out ok aswell (if thats the way you want to go) A garden needs a water feature IMHO.

Well did my wife duties in the home...then went outside swept the back and did the bird baths...came back in hat went on and covered up well to face the front garden as it was hot :phew: swept the gravel and got up old leaves from around my plants...removed 12 new shoots from one Cordyline and a further two from the other Cordyline...removed dead heads from Birthday Girl (Rose Tree)...then cut back the weeping willow and raised it around the edging and removed any odd weeds trying to shoot through, all this with breaks for a :coffee: on hand :snorky:...then all the gravel was swept level with a brush, then I brushed the slabs by the windows and in front of the front fencing...took a good break, then cleaned windows...there's only the the birch tree that needs shaping and hubby does that with ladders :)

Hi Gail, can I ask whhat you do with your Cordyline shoots please?
As you have so many have you never tried rooting them? Even if you don't want them I bet your local charity shops would love them.

Hi KFF, Pete helped me with what to do with them and as they've come through small I was removing them but today...when I checked the one it had established two nice shootings and hubby asked me to pot them...I just don't know if they would take with me cutting them either off the cordyline or out the actual ground
No sorry Verdun :coffee:or peach water only ….I miss my drop of whisky :cry3:

Apart from watering and harvesting there's nothing to do in our garden. Plants are dying, despite the watering and it must be a couple of months since I last mowed the grass.

This is what our main lawn looks like

One of our big viburnums has been dying back. This is after I've cut out the dead

This is what it usually looks like - back left of the picture with the roofline above it.
