What pH is your soil alana ? I think too that just the heat has been holding newly planted stuff back.

Hi Tetters - my soil is heavyish but well drained and neutral ph. I think you're right about it struggling with the hot summer. We've had temperatures in the 30's so I'm hoping that it's just a setback and not "the end" for it.

No alana, dont do that. :gaah:
It would not have enjoyed this summer esp if its in hot area. No amount of watering could keep up with the constant transpiration a newly planted shrub will suffer this summer. Your hamamellis will lose its leaves soon anyway, the roots will adjust and the whole thing will look good in spring. You wont do the plant or yourself any favours by looking at the roots!
The witch hazels are very slow to start with...mine (mollis pallida) is not really in the ideal spot but now delights me every spring with colour and scent. However, I would suggest a generous mulch now, after a generous watering, or after leaf fall :noidea:

Lots of well established shrubs here have suffered leaf loss or browning due to the heat, and hot winds. We even had a load of Sahara sand dumped on us as well, so autumn fall will happen a bit sooner I suppose, and next spring hopefully will restore our faith in mother nature.
There are also a number of plants that appear to be flowering more than usual - like my parthenocissus for example. They have ways of protecting themselves against adversity. :)

Ha ha Tetters ...I think we crossed there but we seem to agree. Re PH, here soil is neutral and I think acid soil is recommended. Does well despite that :noidea:

As you know, Tetters, by our conversations I believe in Justice, Fairness, and only mulching on soil that has been watered before.
