Shredding is a satisfying job and having sunshine on your back makes it even better @wiseowl:)

I've dug up dahlias and labelled them to make it easier next year. I'm leaving some white ones in the ground to take their chance over the winter. Weeded lots of creeping buttercup which had hidden itself under the dahlias. Not my favourite job in the garden but the green bins are being emptied this week so I want to get my moneys worth and make sure both bins are full. We have to pay £84 for them.
Continued getting the bed ready for moving the box plants. The ground is like concrete so can't do much at a time.

I cut down two more dogwoods and a lot of the blackberries. That made another heap 8ft high. I then set light to the first one, pictured on previous page, and as that was burning down I added the new heap to it. Although it was green wood and leaves, the heat from the fire soon made short work of it. The wind was blowing the smoke across the fields - I always wait until the wind is in that direction :pathd:

I've just crawled back indoors, taken something for my back and am resting. I'm too achy and hot to have a shower yet so I'll just have to smell of wood smoke for a while. Mrs Shiney is out so I hope the woody smell will have gone by the time she returns. :fingers crossed:

Weeding, dead heading and then got a couple of sempervivums to plant on a dry stone wall. Sweet Williams and Wallflowers need to be planted and then start cleaning out spent plants from greenhouse.

All I'm going to do is pick beans and then shall be busy non-gardening - which will give my back time to recover. :)

Once I've finished my cuppa, it's time to get out and cut the grass again.

There's a lot of dead grass areas, but the weeds need cutting there, and I need to vacuum up the loose thatch I missed. Half the garden does have grass growing, that seems to be doing its spring push (couldn't in the spring, as the drought started in March). I also need to run the mower under two of our rhododendrons that pretty much died over the summer and had the dead 3/4 cut away, to tidy the newly exposed ground underneath. I will mulch with garden compost, and hopefully the remaining stumps will regenerate well.

Finally got round to sowing the grass seed on the new back lawn, its took me ages to get round to it. Last week the top soil was getting washed away with the heavy rain / hailstone. Hopefully it germinates :fingers crossed:

25/9/18 Managed at last to get into the garden, haven't been too well af late. Filled the pond up as it had almost gone dry. Really annoyed that so much from neighbours garden is forcing it's way through the panels of the fence. Took a look inside the GH, most of the pots now contain dead plants. Then I noticed a pot of Cyclamen flowers growing as if nothing was wrong. This cyclamen was bought and given to Val by grandson Josh aged two years. He is now 20. It never fails to flower, the leaves come later. It's in a 6inch pot and the corm now almost equals the diameter of the pot, the GH hasn't been watered for about a month, so much for a gardener who is supposed to be an expert.
Outside the GH I began a bit of a tidy-up, seemed like pots everywhere. Most of these are going in the wheelie bin, as to be honest I can't imagine using them anymore. Alonside the GH the section of fence, put up by the council has almost collapsed. So I am clearing anything that could be suspect for it's demise. My garden is higher than next doors and prior to the fence being put up, I had installed shuttering and put my own fence up. The council guys removed the shuttering and soon after the whole fence was falling apart.

So backto tidying up. Emptying the pots etc, I also dug out a dead hydrangia and a camellia. Looking at the shrubbery I see that the viburnum opulas is dead, the mock orange needs a good gutting back and a yew that has come from nowhere will have to go. I have come to the conclusion that despite feeding the soil etc, that perhaps due to what might be called ancient trees, the soil is dead, so I might turn to extra high raised beds. Then I had to call it a day. My body had become hot and a skin rash had suddenly appeared. This rash started following my brush with cancer. I look forward to getting back into the swing of things.

Finally got the back and front lawns mowed since we came back from holiday on Saturday and will do the grass verge when the cars are back on the drive as we are having building materials delivered today ready for the screeding to be done in the conservatory tomorrow :fingers crossed::yay:

Have also been down on my knees out the front pulling up the aqualigia seedlings that are growing in all the borders and taking over plus the adult plants I notice have mildew on the foliage so they are going to have to go as well:biggrin:
