I try for a low maintenance garden too DHR but I keep adding plants; I am also a tad passionate so low maintenance is but a theory. :)

No, lucius, the Hessian will not impede root growth but just the reverse by holding in the compost/soil. Don't be taken in by the marketing world by believing that you can only use compost, as I said I used ordinary garden soil to fill the baskets as recommended by Geof Hamilton.

If you line the basket, bottom and sides, with Hessian you don't need to put gravel in the bottom of the container, just on the top to keep the compost/soil from leaking out. It's one of the reasons that Hessian is used as it will stop the compost/soil from leaking out of the sides and bottom when it becomes wet and soluble.:coffee::snorky:

I spent around an hour or so adding more compost to the bog garden, cut off surplus liner, added gravel and rocks around the outside. I was quite tired after shovelling more gravel and lugging rocks individually by hand as wheelbarrow full up. Later on I was telling Roger about some stuff I had read online and about the advice given on here by ARMANDII and Verdun and he says ' why don't we take out the bath and make another pond with a liner ' . WHAT :yikes::yikes::hate-shocked::hate-shocked:.

Ive planted more seeds today some in the greenhouse some direct, then top dressed part of my lawn with compost,

I racked and scarified it last year around this time and it never fully recovered, i left it late summer to flower and re-seed itself, it appears to have picked up i will give it a dose of nitrogen in 5/6 weeks time.

It's a pity he didn't voice this opinion more loudly before we installed the bath and I put in hours of work afterwards. I did point out that we would have to empty the bath and remove everything, remove all the gravel from 3 sides, remove some of the sand that's packed around the bath, install liner and fill/plant up new pond and replace all the gravel. He said ' It won't take long ' .:hate-shocked::hate-shocked:

I remember digging out my pond with the help of one of my Son-in-Laws, back in '93, telling him it would only take the weekend as we were digging in pure sand. That was true, for a while, and then we hit the only area of clay in the whole of West Cheshire:wallbanging::dunno:. We were digging out the clay in "bricks" all the weekend.:gaah: So by the end of Sunday we still had around 15' by 12' to go and that was without forming the shelves for the marginal plants. Luckily, I had booked the week off and 4 days later I had the Liner in, the dry wall built in the pond for the Bog Garden, the sitting area paved and water in the pond.........but Oh, my back and hands!! My old dog, Heidii, is buried down by the pond so I often sit there and remember the good times with her.:doggieshmooze::love30::snorky:

Lots of hard work ARMANDII but it has rewarded you tenfold :). I don't mind hard work , although not so sure I want to start all over again with my pond. There is still so much to do in other areas of the garden plus working on the house. I'm inclined to think the root of R's idea is based upon my comments that we may not get Frogs this year. He seems to think that once we had a body of water in the garden the wildlife would move in immediately. I have explained that the pond - any pond, regardless of whether preformed or not - needs time to establish itself. I don't think our pond is very ' homely ' yet and the surrounding areas are quite exposed still.

Some plants around the edges will help, lucius.:snorky: I planted Ferns, Astilbes, Marsh Marigolds, Irises, Yellow Flag, Cotton Grass, Acorus Gramineus, Sedge Bowles Golden, and a few others, and it's surprising just how quickly they grow to soften the edges and naturalise the pond.:coffee::snorky:

I ventured down the garden to the greenhouse to get some pots and labels. Tomorrow will be ' kitchen ' gardening i.e. gardening in the kitchen, it's to blooming cold outside :rolleyespink: :coffee:

Today was mainly spent wheeling barrow-loads of hedge-shreddings around the garden to provide mulch around the fruit bushes and trees (I know, not ideal, but with -9c forecast in the next few days, it will be a little frost protection), as well as working on the compost lasagne at the bottom of the garden.

Also had a chat with the neighbour in the house below us. They have just bought the plot of land to the right of us - a little despondent at this news. When we first moved in, we thought about asking to buy the land, to plant a fruit orchard in the derelict plot... now, EE can't see us still here in 10 years time, when the new plot of land would be under control. But still a "what could have been" moment.
The positive is - the new owner has given me permission to do whatever is needed to ensure the health of the oak tree that we enjoy on our boundary. So tomorrow I will be hopping over the fence to cut the ivy vines that are growing up the trunk, and threatening the stability of the tree in winter winds...
