          Plastic for Frost
Plastic seems like a good idea for frost protection, but it's just too thin to provide any insulation to plants. Since frost forms when leaf temperatures dip, simply covering the plant isn't going to be enough to protect it -- the trick is to use an insulated covering to capture heat that's radiating from the ground. Plastic that touches plants is even worse than no protection in many cases, since it can hold moisture against plant tissues and cause more serious freeze damage. However, when used as a row cover or placed directly on the ground around a plant, plastic can be an effective tool in the battle against frost.

          Better Coverings
In general, you should toss plastic covers out of your emergency plant supply closet, but thick bedspreads, cardboard boxes and heavy curtains are still winners. Just ensure that when you cover your plant, the cover reaches the ground, trapping warm air under the plant's canopy. The better the cover does this, the safer your plant will be from frost. In areas where frost is frequent and unpredictable, gardeners often erect tall stakes or forms around their frost-sensitive plants so they can drape their covers over the plants and secure them without worrying about the coverings bunching or blowing away in the night.

Four months on from my house move and I've actually made a start in the garden today. Until now the weather has stopped play but it was great to be out in the fresh air at last. :)

Nothing exciting happening though. I've started clearing bracken from the side of the garden and the lawns of deadwood. With so many trees around I can't risk a full bonfire so have been burning this in an incinerator. The horses are being moved from the neighbouring field shortly so that will give me the opportunity to kill any bracken that puts up new shoots.

They are lovely aren't they. I noticed I already have a lot if the plants in my garden. They love wisteria and I have a couple. I've also got koi. Might build a pergola and grow a wisteria up over the pond to give it some much needed shade. Got loads of ideas now!

Ha ha no way. Although from my travels this last year I could have done a series on gardens across the world to try and compete with Monty! :dancy: If mr snorks is working I track down the nearest gardens. San Francisco has some beauts!

I've got soooo many young plants I've been bringing on hanging about in pots :rolleyespink: Tomorrow they will be cold but dry:) and so will I. I'm going to hibernate!:snorky:

@Loki I don't blame you it's freezing at times even when the sun's out but today felt an exception to me and it was lovely instead of all winter in doors :)
