This is what I thought. So, I'm guessing the guy in the video has not done this because his chosen site has walls and a slope. I wonder if water will find a way in and undermine his wall foundations.

I very much doubt it, lucius, as the soil is compact and stays solid by natural draining, the same as natural ponds in the wild do.

Me too. How cold did it get for your last night Perki? I completely forgot to fleece mine but it only hit -4 or -5c here, I prioritised the hydrangeas and camellias first

I don't know what it got down to, I've put the max/min thermometer in the GH for tonight. I forgot about the camellia :yikes: it not got any buds open yet and not to easy to fleece will have to see. speaking of fleece I think a mouse has found a home in the GH in the box with all the fleece in, got some out yesterday shredded so will assume a mouse :noidea:

I'm sure you're right :). It's becoming an obsession and a major source of frustration to me :gaah:. Couldn't sleep last night, turning things over and over in my mind. Only the snow has stopped me from going out there today. The pond is my priority but maybe a day or so leaving it alone would be good.

However ....... the snow has gone and :hotsun: but with a very cold wind. So maybe I could slide out later on.

Hi @Perki my hubby went out yesterday afternoon and saw the cold was affecting my leaves on my camellia plus mines in budding also...so he put cardboard half way around the plant, steaked in some wood around the cardboard but above where the new growth is and he had two bendable plastic quadrantes crossed them over and cable tied the lot together...I gave him two brand new curtains  as we had nothing spare and he's made an Igloo look around it  lets hope that saves it :fingers crossed: :)

Its also the sheer weight of heavy snow that could be a problem so hubby did well there Gail. Remove asap though. Camellias here in full flower are will certainly be shocked if we get quantities of snow. We .....incl plants...are simply not used to it.
Camellias are pretty tough and hardy....the flowers and buds not so!

I put our gardenias and the two tree azaleas we have in ceramic pots in the shed. But the rest of the pots as they are mostly roses should be OK. Both the mimosa and the sambuca are in really big tubs, so the main roots will be well away from the edges of the tubs.

Made sure the birds had plenty of food, dried mealworms and fat pellets. Lots of activity amongst those.

Gail, just referring to when the severe cold is over and then to remove the covers.
No, dont run out and cover only to uncover again every few hours, you will be fit only to drop. For example, the forecast.....as it stands.....suggests milder at the weekend. Then you can uncover. :)

No proper gardening today but for a quick check up on the seedling. Been out for a wonder around with the camera, I'll have look through and add some to the Feb photo comp :)

Got back home and put up the bird box :hapydancsmil: give it a quick lick of pet/plant friendly paint. Any lodgers can paint the rest of the shed :snorky:
