WHAT JOBS ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2018

Not a day to be in the garden, we've had a bit more snow, but now it's sunny again but there's a biting wind.
Most of my fish a "huddling together" five feet down in a corner of my pool.
They like to sit there in the winter as some heat from the pump, UV and air pump is available under the filter return. The filter room is also warmer than the outside. In past years I've put a bubble-wrap pool cover over the pool, but as they are quite big now I've not bothered for the last couple of winters. The water will never freeze.
The pool will also receive some heat from the surrounding earth and from the trickle change supply which is always well above freezing.
At least they're avoiding the snow unlike the poor birds, for which I've put out extra food.

 

@Mark56 Our daffs are fighting it and i'm quite surprised..i do hope your plants fight through and pick up

@Verdun My hubby throwed the curtains back to see how my camellia was doing..the buds have thickened more, leaves are ok and it had 3 new stem growths on it and they've gone a bit higher, so it seems to like living under cover ...as I was worried about it

He's got all my grasses in his shed and they flourishing with growth and he leaves the light on for them, for so long.

That's made my day knowing they're ok but because the snow as come the bottle brushes will have to wait till the snows carmed down

Camellias here are snow covered but I knocked off the snow.....blue sky, white garden. Cooooold hands.
A covering of snow for a limited time can protect buds though Gail
Will be pushing my 2 year old great niece on a sledge tomorrow......we never really grow up do we???

 

Well I didn't know that about the snow but two years I've had it and it's stood there with snow covering it and still flowered ok...the temps are so cold here though @Verdun we've never had it this bad.

We used to have three big camellias.




But I got sick of clearing up all the dead flowers, so we binned two and put this in instead, an almond tree, reducing the size of this "feature" bed.



That got too big so put this in.





Didn't like that after a year or two and have now moved this sambuca that was on the patio and put it in there.





One of the original camellias I cut right back and "hid it," here.
Each year many of the buds got damaged by frost. Which was a bit of a disappointment. But we don't get many flowers as I always prune it right back each year, but it has really nice variegated foliage. It's a bit odd as most of the flowers when we get them are white, but on one side there's always a few which are red.




Our garden, is "ever changing," but it isn't nature that's doing it, it's us!

 

No snow here but bitterly cold. Remembered one of my potted fuschias, "Rivendell", isn't hardy, so have moved that inside to join the collection under the stairs, but not sure if it will already be too late. The kitten is having a great time throwing soil all over the hall so inside might not be much safer for them anyway...

Hellebores and snowdrops looking very sad and droopy. Only other foray outside has been to give the hens more straw and some warm porridge

 

My "style" too DHR. If something doesnt "do" or disappoints then out it goes. A garden is too small to hang on to plants that dont thrive or arent in the "perfect" spot I guess I am a tad impulsive and move something when the moment takes me. Usually though I think it works!
I have a nice white camellia.....in good spot but the flowers are sometimes browned by adverse conditions. No matter, a quick clean up reveals plenty of buds and pure white flowers so it can stay where it is.

 

Yes, I work on a promotion and relegation system.

Something smallish could get relegated to either side of the green bin. It was the case with these two lavenders, next stop was in the bin.



Digressing a bit. When I was working, in one store, check-out operators, usually teenage girls who were not performing well, got temporarily relegated, demoted to filling butter and fats for a week. It was hard job due to the volume of sales.
They knew it was a punishment as did their friends. They were then returned to the check-outs after a week and then usually behaved. The threat was always there. It was quite funny really as actually it wasn't that much of a hardship, better for all than going through the disciplinary procedure.
The staff would make a joke of it, so I was told, if one of them did something that might be criticised, their friends might say, "Ooo! Butter fridge for you next week!"

Anyway, after a couple of girls had been given this punishment who were friends, (they were always talking) when after a week being told that they would be rejoining the check-out line, asked if they could stay on the butter fridge as they liked the work. They'd been doing an excellent job so I had to let them stay. They liked it as they could talk whilst they worked, you can't have that on a check-out.
I had to find another "suitable punishment," for misbehaviour.

 

Same here @Doghouse Riley and the amount of garden furniture I've gave away and brought new is just totally SICK

 

Tell me about it!


I'm sitting here in my little office...alright...the box bedroom watching the football on TV. Behind the curtains are two quite expensive padded recliners, still in their plastic bags in which they were delivered two years ago and have never seen the garden.
There's two more that have had some use, again in plastic bags hanging on the wall in the garage. They've not seen the garden in three years.
There's two plastic chairs in the garage that occasionally get cleaned but never used. There's two more in our tea-house, these do get used in the summer, occasionally, as they have nice padded cushions (from Tesco)



The plastic table that came with them has long gone down the tip.

There's a nice parasol in a bag in the shed, the opaque type that keep out UV rays, the base is in the garage, neither have been used in the last five years.

There's also a cool box complete with a set of nice floral plastic cups, saucers and plates and all the cutlery, in the garage, that have never been used either.

 

Mine is either rusted, rotted or covered in Starling poo, so when you get fed up of your current garden furniture, all donations gratefully accepted
