I too have difficulty growing tall Carnations but am thankful I even get straggly ones. Carnations are my favourite flowers with Freesias running a close second, which seed freely here!

Nicotiana seeds freely here, always pink and white also grow wild, but I have bought a packet a gaily coloured ones which are supposedly scented ... we'll see (or smell).

'Tis true. I couldn't grow them for love nor money in Bucks and here they are everywhere ... even in the gravel where we park!

Got more compost and continued with the thick mulching of front borders. (The showers did appear, heavy at times, but good sunny periods too) Pleased with it...black and looks good enough to eat :)
Re freesias.....with me I think I have got the hang of sowing them now. I sow in cooler times and try to have the patience to wait until they are ready to grow. I leave the pots sown in in sheltered shady spot and forget them. Then they produce those wonderfully scented flowers.:)

My Freesias are all from bulb, those type you buy a pack of anywhere quite cheaply. Mine are all packs from England. If I remember correctly the packs say bloom in August//September but they bloom February/March here.

Here are my straggly Carnations in May and Freesias in March on kitchen patio and in rockery (old photos) ...

                The Freesias always fall down!

@Victoria your carnations are robust compared to the kind I got. For obvious reasons I didn't take a pic to share, but in hindsight, probably should have! If we can't share our failures it would be sad indeed :)

@Jack Sparrow are these some that were force grown for Xmas.? If they are just keep compost moist and plant out after the cold weather.. If they are old bulbs you have found I would pot up for now and plant out in final position in May then just make sure they don’t dry out if we have a long hot summer and they will then flower next year.. Well that’s what I have done successfully myself anyway and I now have some beautiful clumps in my garden..

@Marley Farley :dbgrtmb: I just happened to see some bulbs in a shop today. I think I might have an idea where I can plant them. I'm just impatient and what to get out there and plant things. I will wait until spring before I start.

It's been snowing so I didn't get to do anything outside. Brought some more compost indoors to warm up in the boiler cupboard. Potted on some mixed succulents and a couple of small chlorophytum. Noticed that some of the irises are in flower. It won't be long before the crocuses are joining them. :hapydancsmil:

I have had iris leaves for a while. They are in pots though. I dont know if that makes a difference. In the ground I have daffodils, snowdrops and alliums all shooting leaves. Some of the snowdrops are just starting to bud.

                                • @Jack Sparrow if they are bulbs you spotted in a shop and the place you want them is quite sheltered you could take a chance and plant them perhaps, they are hardy as heck one growing, but always worried planting bulbs out at this time of year.. Or you could half out and half in a pot in a frost free place and then plant out may..
