Storm Freya is set to batter us over the next few hours so the only garden jobs will be to batten down the hatches and check everything is secure:sad:

Lucius, philadelphus for me is very wind tolerant.....the exception is aureus I think whose yellow leaves are vulnerable to wind and strong sun. However, I think you will lose the scent in very exposed positions. Delightful scent from mine, Belle Etoile, to the side of my lawn in a relatively sheltered spot....in June and July it makes mowing esp enjoyable
Wegeila? Again this copes very well in windy locations down here ; not sure about very cold and windy locations though
So, take care folks Freya is coming your way too :)

If it's very windy then you may have to support the Weigelia for a while. Taken time, you could also train it into a standard that would easily withstand strong winds. This isn't a good shot of one of ours that has been trained as a standard but I'm not going out there in this weather whilst full of the lurgy :heehee:

Just spent a couple of hours in the tunnel.

Sown different ensete and musa seeds along with blue bean tree which needs 3 months warmth, 3 months cold and then back to the warmth.

Potted on my Agave victorae regianae seedlings and had a general weed around the agaves in pots in the tunnel

All I've done today is to rearrange the centre of balance of the birdfeeders so that they won't get blown over in the wind :fingers crossed:

Far too wet other than to go out to feed the birds..and clean my golf shoes ready for tomorrow.
You have to get your priorities right.

Lots of Athletics and Track Cycling on TV again today. I record both and switch from one to the other, fast forwarding through all the rabbit from past contestants, so I can just concentrate on the events. it makes it nearly as good as actually being there.

I've looked out the window at the garden - and watched Mrs Shiney potting up some plants - and I've decided to cook some salt beef instead.

Sun has come out here.... Freya who???:noidea:
Will now pot on lupins I had divided last summer, sow garden peas and pot on echeverias I had propagated earlier......:)

Edit....potted up rooted perennial cuttings of heliotrope Chatsworth and potted on tithonia seedlings
Feeling very warm out there in the sunshine despite the howling wind overhead. Walled garden creates protected micro climate:)

Hello all from SF! It’s been pouring down with rain but yesterday we went to sausalito (a little town opposite side of the golden gate bridge) and we had a good walk around the residential areas and gosh the garden were absolutely beautiful. I took loads of pics-hope the residents didnt mind lol. Many of the garden’s had succulents. Gave me lots of ideas.

Thanks for the recommendation @shiney i’ll look for it during the week whilst mr snorks is working :)

@Snorky85 I see California is getting record rainfall. Did you bring it with you? :)

Storm Freya has arrived but not as severe as originally predicted - only 48mph winds instead of 78mph :heehee:.

@Verdun my Philadelphus is ' virginal ' , so it says on box. Leaves are pale green ( but it is a young plant so they may change later on ). Would it grow in a pot ? I have two that are large enough to grow small trees in. If it were on my patio I might get to smell it :).

@shiney my Weigela was planted by someone who knew more about gardening than I do :loll:. It's in a position that gets a lot of shade and even in summer it's not in full sun. It's relatively sheltered. It does well though and the bees love it.

Hello Lucius....Freya is not doing much here yet, fingers crossed :) Happy to say :)

No, philadelphus is not really a pot plant I’m afraid. Also lovely in flower scent wise, Virginal too, but they aren’t really much to look at otherwise. You could restrict its size with careful pruning so maybe you could find a spot in the garden for it? Because it’s grown for its scent rather than its aesthetic features you could have it tucked away ??
