What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2019

@2nd_bassoon lots of cutting can take and grow roots in just a glass of water, its a very easy way to take cutting.

@JJ28 Perlite mainly used to aid drainage and help open the compost up / aerate. Vermiculate is used to retain moister - aerates the compost but not as much as perlite.

 

Haven't done much in the garden yet I've got some dahlias to plant or sink though. Finally mange to mow the lawn yesterday evening its not been cut a week because of the weather. Just been out for a tour with the camera , lots of bees / wasps / butterfly's and other insects around.

 

Cut the chicken paddock this morning before I let them out. Cut the lawns. Did a bit of weeding which was needed after the recent rain.
Then put the hammock up and immediately nodded off for a good hour.

 

Thank you for advice, Perki and Shiney. I will put some cuttings in vermiculite/mpc mix and also try some starting off in just water. Will keep close eyes on both.

Probably broke a lot of stems whilst desperately trying to save tall Dahlias. Deadheaded (to be continued tomorrow) the fleabane, a job very much like deadheading Lobelias. It'll take a while.

Deadheading is a job I don't like, it just feels so wrong to cut off a 70% brown Buddleia bloom where a butterfly has just feasted. Well, I'm not as bad as my Nana who refused to cut anything that still had a little green on it anywhere. I occasionally considered brown spray paint to allow me to do some necessary pruning in her garden

Oh, and harvested round carrots (or rather, a carrot) grown in a washing up bowl- I'm in for a feast tonight!

 

I've removed two branches from a Sycamore that's gradually restricting the view from my garden. A temporary measure until it's felled next Spring.



I've also continued digging over a 15ft length of balding lawn where an old shed stood in the past. It's not easy when digging out rocks in the process. The ground is compacted and pools with water, so the aim is to loosen the soil and re-seed.

Got the dahlias planted / sunk , had to squeeze past the wasp mob feasting on a Angelica Gigas can't believe how many are on it. Move the Acatea James Crompton out from under the dicentra / astrantia and phlox into it own space it never really got going, its still quite a small plant for its age. Removed the meconopsis and a primula to make room, potted the primula for planting later but the Meconopsis has to go it purple supposed to be blue and it irritates me , my mum more than happy to have it . Done a bit of dead headed and questioning if I like the Calamagrostis Karl F yet it goes right with the plants around it, I've took more of a liking to miscanthus which I previously weren't keen on may change it in spring.

 

Just come in from an evening dead heading, watering and tidying up session. Been enjoying the garden lately rather than being busy redesigning it etc.

 

Cheeky so-and-so! I didn't start in the garden until 3pm. Housework has to be done and I'm on a tight schedule at the moment to get the house and garden straight, before the onslaught of my daughter and grandchildren staying from next weekend.

Looked at my Purple Queen supposedly dwarf french beans that are now 3ft and climbing up anything in reach, I've now put some canes in to help them.
These are from De Ree, last year I wrote to them and told them the same so they sent me 2 extra packets with an excuse and they are just the same. The beans are great but definitely NOT dwarf
Will stick with my other DFBs that only grow to about a foot and use these as climbers instead.
De Ree are normally good seeds,49p in the range.

 

A bad start today - I got thorned by a rose and stung by a bug. The joys of gardening I've been deadheading this morning.
I had a glorious day out at RHS Hyde Hall Garden Flower Day yesterday. Perfect weather, great company and lots of tempting plants to buy. I got lots of ideas from their extensive dry garden and was surprised to see many of the plants I have in my garden are good for drought so my budget will be reduced when I get going on it.
My husband joined the RHS which was also a surprise - I've been a member for years and he can get in to the RHS gardens free with me but he wanted his own card. It was very good value £28.75 for the year and I got £10 in vouchers because I recommended him. BARGAIN!!!!
