I fed all the large pots of Hardy Perennials, the Shrub Roses in the borders and the climbing Roses adorning the Arbour. and finally the Tree Fern with a mixture of Liquid Seaweed and Miracle Grow, while dead heading the Roses and tying back the Honeysuckle, where needed. The grass on the rear lawn had dried out enough to be mowed and strimmed although the Strimmer line spool needed refilling again before I could start, a job that sometmes can be so frustrating to do properly:wallbanging::gaah::heehee:

@Verdun glad that your brother is ok in his new home.

@Snorky85 hope that you feel better soon.

Uncovered some of the blueberry plants that have finished fruiting, then I watered them, the flower containers and the baskets.
I have to watch how much bending that i do because it hurts my back, I just do as much as i can and leave the rest until another day.

        A random question.

My gooseberry bush is growing well in all directions except the one I want. I want to grow one strong upright and then train side shoots from that.

Do I keep trimming away all the unwanted growth or do I need to do it at a specific time?

For training purposes remember....prune to upward or inward facing buds for upright growth, for a wider more horizontal shoot prune to downward or outward facing buds. Yep, now is a good time for this establishment pruning :)

I assume you are growing a normal bush shape and not as fan or cordon.

I want to grow a cordon. At the moment it's a traditional Bush shape.

It's also in a pot. When it's strong enough I will put it in the ground.

It should then be grown at an angle of 45 degrees
            Can you post a picture?

Had a shouting match with a red squirrel perching in a tree. He objected to me being out there weeding. The little cuss was lucky I was too busy to come in and get my rifle. They are not pretty little things like the ones you folks have over there. And they are not native to Canada, they snuck up over the border. Normally wildlife doesn't bother me but these fellows are notoriously distructive and indeed, they broke through some soffit to gain entry to my house earlier this year. Took me a week to get rid.

Did a lot of weeding and watering. I'd best water the pots again tonight as I'll be on the road early tomorrow.

@CanadianLori this was some of it. The main pile and the tree branches were burned as was a 6ft pile of laurel, just out of view to the left of the picture, plus half of a one ton bag of branches and clippings. It just leaves two smaller piles of laurel and one and a half ton bags. I'll burn those when my muscles (what muscles  :old: :heehee:) have recovered. The pile of dead tree branches stretched back 8ft to the fence! That's a typical one month collection of tidying so it's good that we have no restriction on burning. They do have restrictions in some of the towns but in country areas where the gardens are large they found that if they restricted burning or charged for removal of green waste they just got lots of fly-tipping along the road verges. Our local authority started charging for recycling green waste and it cost them £150,000 in a month to clear the verges (I think there had been a deliberate social media organising of the tipping to demonstrate that the policy was wrong). Apart from doing a lot of composting and brning we fill four wheelie bins per week.

We're aloud to put light garden waste in the rubbish bin. Hubby takes the large amounts to the recycling centre and also the council charges to take it in a separate bin. We don't do the latter because why would we when the other 2 are free.:)

We have much too much garden waste to take to a recycling centre and it would not be environmentally friendly for us to do a 15 mile journey to it. :noidea:
