@Sian in Belgium Hi. Lavander wasn't what I had in mind but it does have potential. It should be easy to plant and low maintenance afterwards. I'll look out for multiple deals over the Bank holiday weekend.

Would spring bulbs thrive in the same soil? I'm looking at daffodils and mascari mostly.

I spent 3 hours on my knees in the garden digging out Couch Grass roots in a section of the Walk Around Border. As my soil is soft and sandy Couch Grass roots will travel up to 3' just below the surface so you start at one point and end up pulling up somewhere else in the border:dunno:. I also dug up long runners of Saponaria (Soapwort) which also sends runners just below the surface of the soil.
    upload_2019-8-19_11-29-52.jpeg
It has lovely small white flowers but it now lists among the few plants that I regret putting into the garden as it loves my soft sandy soik and has run rampant in this particular border. I filled two big garden sacks of it and there are still runners hiding in the soil:wallbanging::gaah: The Saponaria runners and the Couch Grass Roots get put in the same sack while other stuff goes in to another sack so that the first sack ends up in the Council Wheelie Bin and the second goes on the compost.
I discovered one or two plants that I had forgotten I had planted years ago as I shuffled on my knees through the border so that was a bonus. Another plant that I regret planting is Acanthus
Spinosus (Bears Breeches) as it too loves my soil and explodes into growth every year which crowds other plants nearby. It's not easy to get rid of, as if you leave one tiny bit of root behind then it will be back!!

After three hours of being on my knees, completely asborbed in what I was doing I discovered that getting down on my knees was a lot easier than getting up:old::wallbanging::hate-shocked:. Getting up on my feet was a major feat (pun):heehee: and I realised I was done for the day and I headed for a Mug of Tea and a session on the Sofa trying to get rid of the inevitable pain:heehee:.......still, I got something worthwhile done in the garden so that was some compensation.

I should think that bulbs generally would do well in the same soil. They both need good drainage, and unlike many plants do not mind “going a little hungry”. Tete-â-Tate bulbs, which do great in pots, also do well in my poor, free-draining soil. What made me think of lavender is that it can tolerate a little neglect, if they forget to water the pot regularly in the summer. That plus I think any touchy-feely plant is great for children!

Thank you Snorky...The hedging took just under five years to fill out. They were good 12" bare root plants and planted a bit closer together than recommended because...I'm impatient.

Share your doubts about Acanthus Spinosus ARMANDII :)

Lovely looking plant but it is a belligerent bedfellow. Needs a lot of space or a border of its own.

However, I cleared an area of it once and a neighbour wanted some. Now in his almost pure sand and nothing else garden he now has an impressive clump ......horses for courses:noidea:

Potted on 48 wallflowers, only another 40 and that's it, hubby's got to get some more compost. . Picked some blackberries out of the garden.

Today I finished livening up some dreary grey slabs with some masonry paint. I still haven’t had any time to just sit in the garden and enjoy it whilst I revamp it and I go offshore tomorrow for 3 weeks

Not done a lot in the garden today due to the frequent brief smatterings of rain and drizzle that's been the main feature of the day. So I sat out on the patio with Jenny:cat-kittyandsmiley: and the inevitable Mug of Tea and watched the Butterflies fluttering around the Observatory, Trellis Entrance and the big blue Buddliea at the West end of the patio. It's the first time I saw, this year, Red Admirals and they were there in quite a few numbers, while also watching two, what I think were, Buzzards flying together and mock fighting each other with moves such as turning upside down with their legs and claws extended and then flying happily together before mock fighting again......lovely to see:love30:

Shattered! Ended up shaping 5 conifers around the boundary of the back garden. And neighbour kindly offered me a load of wood chippings to tidy up the border so was shovelling several builder sacks full from her farm back to the house. Still need a load more stuff but it’s made a start-much neater. Will finish it tomorrow.

Some nice colour combinations in that border, @Kon!

Wasn't familiar with these plants and thought you were engaging in some sort of bizarre superstition when I read that! :roflol:

Hi Kon, I may be wrong here ( I hope @longk can clear ths up as I know he has grown them in the past ) but I would have thought it was too late to be planting these out now as they're tender.
