Only job left in the garden today is to neck a can of cider and have a bonfire........ spent over 5 hours sowing veggie/herb seed today. Tomorrow? more digging of the garden, clearing out the greenhouse, planting potatoes and hopefully more cider! Oh, gotta cook Sunday lunch too!

Sown peas and prepared veg patch for sowing carrots and the like this week.
        Divided grasses and potted up.
Prepared large containers for planting up later.
Trimmed evergreens, again. They haven’t stopped growing over winter.
Very warm, even hot, in the garden. Fantastic :)

It might not look that pretty but I have now added my 8 flair tulips and 4 clumps of yellow daffodils. Hopefully this time next year they will put on a good display. I am slightly worried about some of my tulip buds that appeared to be rather dry and shrivelled. That may have been my fault. Even so the bulb should still be healthy enough.

I have also added labels to each of the clumps. That way, in the autumn I can plant other bulbs without disturbing what's already there.

Cut the paddock this morning. Neighbours may not have been too impressed at 8am but its easier to cut before the chickens are let out.

Then Ive been moving stuff around in the tunnel. Some of the less tender plants are now back outside which means I have a bit more space. Still lots to move though and it then needs a tidy up before its planted up with fruit & veg in anger.

Playing golf today, I noticed a firm of tree surgeons were doing a job for our club. So I asked them to come and give me an estimate for taking down our big conifer. They are coming on Sunday. I've got another firm coming tomorrow afternoon.

96CC7385-55E8-48E5-941E-40C1AD3F2E5D.jpeg Hi guys.... I’ve had a nightmare this year with sowing my cosmos seeds indoors! Virtually none germinated!

Of the ones that did, is now the time to pot on? Do I plant them in deeper in doing so?

I’ve sowed another batch of about 40 today! Hoping for better results!

Kriss, cosmos germinate better with the warmer weather...your second batch will prob be a lot better. Having said that my own sowings germinated well and have been potted on :)

Keep cosmos seedlings on the dry side...they will suffer or sulk if too wet.

No, don’t pot those on yet Kriss....no need to for a good while yet. Wait until roots are showing at bottom of the pots. You can give them a dilute liquid feed when they are a little bigger.

I would have pricked out those seedlings into smaller pots Kriss .....over potting tends to “intimidate” seedlings and they grow better if potted on regularly

Because cosmos can grow leggy, when I pot on I plant deeper. Pinching out a few times will help produce thicker, sturdier plants :)

As part of the negotiations with the old man about growing veg in the back garden, we decided to build a corral to hide the pots of carrots, peas and spuds whilst they're out of the greenhouse.

After finding out none of the decking boards we bought were the same size as the next, we've managed to bodge together a relatively straight frame for the bottom. Add to that a complete lack of power tools and every one of those brackets were screwed into place with our now extremely painful hands.

                        corral1.jpg

Now, all that is left is to turn this pile of timber into something that will help keep the numerous birds that nest in every garden around us out.

                        corral2.jpg

But for now, handfuls of Germolene, plasters and some well earned cups of tea.

Thanks. I knew the pots were far too wet. Take two!!!

Can I ask a question about narcissis? I noticed that the milder weather brought some early displays throughout my part of Scotland. The bulbs I bought and planted last year however appear to still be a little way from flowering though! Will they still flower? Could it be there are just young plants?

(My Nepata 6 hills is looking great!!!! Roll on summer!!!)

Kriss, daffs can be early, mid term or late flowering. Different varieties flower at different times. So, yes, they could yet flower. Remember not to cut the foliage of daffs for at least 6 weeks until it dies down......this will help good flowering next year. Also feed them now.:)

                              Nice sunny day today

Been out this afternoon and removed Crocosmia Lucifer and moved other bits around , got a wheel barrow full of plants to take round and plant in my mum garden. Planning out another border where CLucifer was along with a yellow Lupin which gets decimated every year so had enough of that as well. The plan is Hydrangea strong anabella with sanguisorba scapino planted behind and Veronicastrum Diane behind Sanguisorba Scapino then monarda Scorpion , I've got a acontium stainless steel to fit in somewhere but I am having a rethink on that may look a bit odd with veronicastrum Diane, still need to buy the Hydrangea and sanguisorba my bank account been battered last 2 weeks with buying plants.

I've planted out a eremurus which I've had in a pot it never flowered, so I am taking a chance on planting it in the garden I can't see it surviving to be honest :fingers crossed: it will thrive and love its new home.

Keeping an eye out on monarda Beauty of cobham , its it wrong I kind of want it to disappear even though I like it so I can get a different plant to go their :noidea:

                                Should look good Perki :)
Stainless Steel should look fine with V. Diane ....can’t see why they would clash. It was my favourite aconitum.....removed it because of poss danger to kids and pets!!! Anyway, good to experiment ...I do it all the time:)
I grow hydrangea limelight ....flowers are white for most of the summer...with Sanguisorba Red Thunder. Always eye catching here. I am preferring the paniculatas these days....more adaptable I think. I grow a few Sanguisorbas here ....some fantastic varieties around now..:)
Cut 2 lawns .....they were mown only a few days ago....trimmed edges, trimmed more evergreens and made time to erect a support for a newly planted clematis at my niece’s.
Absolute corker of a day that began with a walk on the beach....sea temps can only be about 10 degrees so a tad chilly for a dip. :)
