Not much time spent so far, but have felled a lot of top growth from a cherry laurel that was at the end of the hedge, but has been allowed to grow into a thug of a tree. The rhododendrons underneath will be much happier!!

Now, all I have to do is to go outside to cut into manageable-sized pieces. All of a sudden, watching grass grow has become very appealing!!

@Verdun I would like to see a photo of your iridescent bells. My research tells me they are a fairly recent discovery. Did you get them locally.? Maybe we can look out for them when we pass that way in September.

Also you said you would take a photo of your HF Young.

I didn't feel inspired to do much in the garden today despite the improved weather.

I hacked at a few bushes. I pulled up a few tree shaped weeds from my gravelled drive. I forked up the soil where my rockery used to be and dug out some bricks and rocks that look as they were used as infill. They are sitting just below the soil level.

What I have now is a big patch of mud with slightly fewer rocks in it. I don't want to lose the soil but at the same time I don't have anywhere to store it. What I end up doing is moving it around. I was hoping that by removing all the rocks etc there would be enough room for the soil level to drop on its own. It doesn't seem to be working that way.

The object is to clear away about 4 to 6 inches from the top. I would then anchor the legs of the swing into the subsoil. The void would then be filled with bark chippings on top of a membrane. It sounds simple enough.

      G.

Started the posts for the pergola today but intermittent rain held me back a bit and potted up some calibrachoa can orange plug plants from Sarah Raven.

                Sorry Gary :)
I am not at home right now but tomorrow I will try to take a pic of HF Young. Memory like a sieve :) Have made a note to do just that. If I didn’t write lists of things to do I think I would never remember :noidea:
Iridescent Bells ...I have 2 of them....are simply making growth now so just a mound of foliage. I got mine from Paddocks Plants last year (incidentally they are brilliant for cost, delivery and variety). I will take pictures for sure though when they flower. Yes, I think IB is a fairly recent introduction over past 3 or 4 years perhaps. Delightful plant though and if you see one grab it and trust me you won’t regret it :)

I did a bit, either side of watching Kiki Bertens beat Simona Halep (the spectator's favourite) in the Madrid open final.

Re-felted the roof of the little bird feeder. The bamboo bar at the front keeps the wood pigeons out.

                      P1020720.JPG

Weeded the rockery, it's just grass, why does the stuff prefer to grow where you don't want it to?

                      P1020722.JPG

Attempted to get the ground cover to close up the gaps either side of the fountain plinth. Getting there.

                      P1020740.JPG

Mowed the lawn ..again! Still got half a grass box off it. Setting sun spoilt the photo.

                      P1020734.JPG

Brushed some sand into the gaps in the new paving. Pleased that even after a heavy downpour like once today, it drains quickly, as it should with 20 tonnes of hardcore under it.

Now the bit I don't like. Vacuuming up all the fallen blossom from the wisteria on this pergola having to dance around all my wife's naffin' pots on the patio. It makes it so much harder to do.
I'll give it a week to die off a bit more, then I'll get up there on the ladder and prune it off, as I do each year.

We're still working hard on tidying up and all the general gardening jobs, plus still potting and preparing lots more plants for sale.

I'm working on weaving the overhead part of the ShineyFrames and have used 110m of twine so far. I take a break from the stretching up each time I use up a roll of twine. :dbgrtmb:

I hope to do grass cutting today if it dries out sufficiently. Still frosty at the moment.

Too hot for gardening today but had my first dip in the sea. Sea was not quite as cold as I thought but got a way to go yet for comfortable swimming.
I did though take a cider outside and contemplate planting tom or so:)
