Over the last few days I've been doing the usual lawn mowing, edging and weeding but seem to be losing the battle against the weeds. Two days ago Mrs Shiney told me that she had discovered two ash trees and a field maple amongst other shrubs/trees and couldn't dig them out. So I did the usual macho thing, said leave it to me and went to have a go. They were all about 6ft high! :yikes: I eventually managed to get them out with a lot of digging and pulling, which wasn't easy as they were amongst other trees. Those of you that know my garden will know that it's quite easy to miss things like that. :dunno:

We're still potting up and potting on but calling it a day now so we can start tidying up ready for Open Day. :phew:

I've moved about three dozen ShineyHybrid chillies out of the propagator on to racking in the greenhouse and moved some of the Naga chillies from the house and into the propagator. The Hybrids are flowering well and there are some chillies already on them. The Nagas won't have flowers for some time yet.

Runner beans shall be leaving the greenhouse soon. 200 hundred are going this week to the people that ordered them and I'll start planting out this weekend. Another 100 will be collected next week and I sowed 200 more yesterday and will sow another 200 tomorrow.

Won’t be doing anything in the garden until late this afternoon but thereafter a whole lot of planting.
I’m like DHR it seems......I don’t suffer from my exertions in the garden but I also work at a brisk, if not frantic, pace to get things done ASAP :)

Well my injuries from yesterday’s gardening is mainly sunburn. Jeez my face and neck are radish red! Id even put sun suncream on in the morning and I thought with having my tan from thailand i’d have been ok. Make sure you cover up peeps!

This morning I am out planting the raised beds up with various purchases, self grown cuttings and donations from family and friends. I’ve got super duper suncream on, a hat, and even a hoody zipped up as its a bit chilly in the shade this early.

        Have a lovely day everyone.

From early evening for a couple of hours I planted a group of sunpatiens magenta, verbena lollipop, leucanthemum purple velvet, a group of cosmos purity and removed untidy dead and dying daff foliage. Plenty of compost dug in and all thickly mulched. Still feeling pretty warm out there. Very satisfying....love the temporary “neatness” of clean ground and new planting :)
Pricked out zaluzianskya seedlings.....fantastic scent from early evening to sun up. Should have sown them earlier though so a tad behind this time last year for them.:)
Tomorrow I will collect another load of local compost and continue planting and mulching :)

Izzy (my dog) needed a quiet time today, as her back legs were a little wobbly last night.

So I did lots of “same place” tasks, so she could sleep nearby...

I weeded the three raised veg beds, as they were mainly unplanted since winter. Found lots of young rocket plants, annual poppies, snapdragon seedlings, and a pumpkin seedling. I also weeded the bigger, bulkier weeds (mainly relatives of dandelions) that were growing in between the beds, so it would be more comfortable to walk on.
I sowed some beans, both runner and dwarf.
I went through my seed box, found all the flower seeds that are past their use by dates, and scattered them around the garden, basically broadcast sowing. If they come up, they come up. If not, then they rot and compost down....
Gravel path around the back of the house was cleared of weeds, tree seedlings etc. Wallflowers dead headed.
In between, watched newts courting in the pond, as you so!!

We're still finishing the potting up and Mrs Shiney has done a few hanging baskets (she said she wouldn't do any this year ). I sold another 100 (extra) bean plants last night and am putting the last 150 seeds into soak.

Planted out some Cobaea in a metal climbing plant support tower. I had to run strings vertically to form a framework for them to climb. I then started training the plants up the strings by hooking their very fine climbing grips onto the string. It was fairly easy to train them (have to get them to curl the correct direction) but their very tiny tips kept hooking into my skin. I'm now trying to decide where to put some more Clematis that we have.

It was "shopping day" today. So not much time for gardening or watching tennis on the TV.

So that was Waitrose for some chicken pieces and three crispy ducks to take advantage of the £8 off £40, voucher. Crispy ducks have been on "suspension" for two weeks according to an assistant when she checked her terminal, the last time I was in there three weeks ago. So I was glad they've been reprieved, so much so I bought their entire stock.

I've had to put the contents of our two back-up freezers in "the room," in the garage, on a spread sheet, to exercise a bit of stock control, so my wife doesn't order stuff we don't need. I'll keep a copy and she can tick off stuff she asks me to bring up. She can see what's in the Miele freezer in the kitchen herself.

I'm reminded of when the kids were at home. We had a big fridge in the kitchen and a chest freezer in the garage. If asked what the wanted for their evening meal, the usual answer was, particularly in the winter, "Anything that doesn't involve one of us having to go out of the house, down to garage and get it out of the freezer."

Then with the shopping, it was M&S, Tesco's, Home Bargains, Aldi and finally Saisbury's.
Although I don't mind doing the shopping because of her disabilty, I just wish there were fewer shops and they were closer together. Waitrose is miles away.

Anyway I had time to purchase some scrap MDF from a local woodyard, to put up two extra shelves in "the rabbit shed." You couldn't swing a cat in there before. The two back-up freezers that were in there I've moved to "the room" in the garage. This was until recently full of koi pool filters and the quarantine tank.

So there's a bit more order to my gardening equipment and things are easier to find.

A lot of planting done, started staking heleniums ( a lot to do) some weeding.
Started off cloudy but day gradually brightened and warmed up. Very pleasant :)

I watered everything last night. Despite last week's rain, the ground is conspicuously cracking up. Today was a bit cooler and more overcast. Its possible that more rain is on it's way.

I was given a baby gooseberry bush which I have potted on. I dont have anywhere for it to go so ultimately it is going to have to live in a pot. My mum gave me it so I am going to have to keep it. At least for now it is too small to cause an issue.

My hedges were trimmed today. Before I noticed the hedges I noticed that some of my plants had been flattened. I guess when I rejig I will have to leave a buffer zone. It shouldn't spoil the overall aesthetics of the area.

                                G.
