What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2019

Been GC this morning and picked up a couple of fuchsia and a Ensete Maurii which didn't really fit in my rucksack, slow ride home with a little bit of tearing on one leaf but its home .
Going to mow the lawn with the cylinder this afternoon but next door out in the garden so I will hold my horse and do it later, I am enjoying looking at my Blue meconopsis through the window they are so mesmerising

 

Another cracking few hours in the garden today.Quite a lot of the time was spent just looking and thinking...as well as planting up some fuchias ,watering and sowing more Lettuce and annual GYP and Angelica.

 

Picked some nice radish for tea, re-potted some yucca we have been given and repotted some giant fuschia . Sowed some more lettuce and moved by truck some rather heavy tubs.

I got a new head for my petrol strimmer which is awesome but dangerous, it’s like two blunt chainsaw blades it cuts everything in its path but is so off balance the vibration is terrible.
My original blade I had stopped every time it met a weed of more than 1/4”, the blades are very worn after 1 use that’s why I changed it

 

Just had a wander around both gardens before the football starts.

I got up onto the roof of the tea-house and attacked the end one of next door's overhanging trees with my Barnel extending pruners. These trees cut a lot of sun out in the late afternoon. I'll be forever clearing up their catkins soon. It's an ongoing process every year. I need a ladder against the fence to reach up with the pruner for the rest of the trees. I might do a bit more tomorrow.



I also pruned off some of the branches of a tree in the corner of the garden of the house to the right of the one behind ours. I don't want the wind to make any branch start brushing against the roofing felt of the tea-house, as it could damage it. My wife would not have been best pleased if she'd seen me walking around on this roof at my age, in my Wilko's slip-on garden clogs. I've got some very nice "builders boots" with reinforced toe-caps in the rabbit shed, she made me buy, but they are a pain to put on and lace-up




I noticed that the wood pigeons had started building a nest in the top of our big acer in our small front garden. The tree doesn't look particularly tall here, but it's about fifteen foot.



They could only have been at it for a couple of days, as I check it regularly at this time of the year, as they've tried in past years, too, when the foliage thickens up.
A good poke with a long pole was enough to scatter an assortment of twigs. They've always been rubbish at nest building.

 

Finished all the posts height wise, done a bit of routing just to soften the look, done four two to go.

 

Managed an hour or two in the garden.....added more plants. It got very warm at midday and at times was quite hot.

 

I'm exhausted. Did a lot more planting out in between doing laundry, downloading CCTV data, fixing the electric fence, combatting red squirrels who found an access to my house and setting uo my potting table which has a faucet to hook up. Still have about 20 seedlings to go out in the raised beds but decided I'd rather collapse in my chair and have a spritzer and leave them for tomorrow.

Lovely day in the garden, had hoped to get round to my Dad's but didn't make it.

What can you do when you need more border space?...............talk hubs in to lifting up some lawn to make it bigger

Trimmed some of the 'bad hair day ' looking shrubs. Did some more staking and put in place some ( hopefully) inconspicuous plant supports, normally leave it too late so I am really pleased to be one step ahead this year.

Hope to begin planting out my new bit of border tomorrow....

 

Did the Big Greenhouse Swap i.e. took everything hardy-ish out and fitted the tomatoes in. I have a walk in blow-away type of a tent which doesn't retain any warmth so it is way too early to put tomatoes out, but as the plants were seriously taking over the living room there was no choice. Broke a lot of stems in the process.

Organised, moved things around, decided to plant one large herb container instead of pots of this and that, enjoyed the warm rain and carried a bedful of mud on freshly scrubbed floors.

Scrubbed up for a do, survived, came home,kicked off the heels and discovered that my bigger Phalaenopsis orchid is growing a flower stem Clearly it's a sign of advancing years when you return from a night out and first thing check your plants, and then as an afterthought, the kids.

 

Mowed the lawn and re mowed after adjusting the cylinder. Potted on lots of begonia and antirrhinums, some petunia - tithonia and maurandya. Took more fuchsia cutting I am getting quite a collection of fuchsia at the moment.

 

Put up canes for runner and French beans. String up tomatoes in greenhouse. Start to move cacti to greenhouse for summer break. Weeding, watering and dead heading

 

Plan is to plant up my new bit of border today, and may pop over and do a bit in my Dad's garden too if the rain doesn't arrive.

 

Cleavers and vetch - sounds like a firm of dodgy solictors or accountants.. is prolific in the borders this year. I can't remember a better year for them. Tackled them in the borders - fortunately they are easy to extract.
Planted potted up dahlias and got the grass cut and borders trimmed. Now time for coffee and a chance to enjoy the overall effect without being distracted the the occasional weed that makes an appearance behind my back
