Lawns mown....been a gorgeous day since late morning ...and some planting done. Cut several clumps of geum Totally Tangerine hard back......they have performed well since early spring and now I want nearby summer plants to take over.

Went to see an old friend who now has Parkinsons. His brother was over from Ireland so good to see them both again. :)

I recently cut my geum totally tangerine back hard. I hadn't kept up with dead heading it and it was starting to look straggly.

Although it rained overnight it stayed dry all day. So when I came home from golf I fed both lawns, I use a cheap soluble lawn feed from Wilkos, it's quite effective. I gave all the pots a feed, the roses a foliar feed spray and did a bit of dead-heading. Everything is growing nicely, particularly the new rockery plants.
          Killed six lily beetles.
I need to do some more quince pruning tomorrow and tie down some more of the Myleen clematis hanging down over the front door.

I watch very little on TV gardening etc. I'm not disputing the personalities may have great know how, but it really gets on my wick with all the arm and hand gestures, and the often excited voices. Makes me wonder at times, what team they are batting for. So often it's like seeing Ken Dodd and his tickling stick.....Oh! what a grand day.

Picked black currants, dug up a hellebore that wasn’t as good as others I have and replaced with a group of agastache Tangerine, and then sat in the sun with a cider :)

I sorted the Mayleen. A bit of a battle as it wants to grow upwards, but I want it to be different.

Gave our three quinces on the side fence a bit of a prune. I had to go next door to attack the bits growing over the fence. Easy to get to from there, as they 've just lawn all down that side.

Used my Barnel telescopic pruners to get at them from my side. So I didn't have to stand in the border.
Some branches were two feet above the top of the fence.

                          Filled half the green bin.

                          P1030047.JPG

It needs to be done as they grow like mad, both upwards, over the fence and towards the azaleas and rhodos. In a "straight fight" a quince will always beat both.

I don't like them to grow tall as the block out some of the sun on plants in that border, for much out of the day.

Still a bit to do, but your arm starts to ache after a bit when the pruner is extended.

The pruning improves the aspect as you look down the garden, as they aren't so dominant.

Given the forecasted armageddon that's **supposed** to be hitting us over the next few days, I'm going to be staking/supporting my Echinops as it's over 6ft tall! I'll also be tackling the bramble/nettle/jungle that has grown around our sheds. We're changing one shed either later this summer or early spring, so I want to get the area cleared to be able to get a decent visualisation of how we want the area to look.
Our oil tank is also situated by the sheds, so need to clear around that too! I'll take before & after pics and put them on my Old Cottage Garden thread when it's done.

We're busy in the garden but just doing all the usual maintenance jobs. I'm now mowing about three times a week as I can't do all the grass in one go. I've had to put an artificial limit on mowing to make sure I don't overdo things. So I limit myself to one tank of petrol a session.

Weeding is a non-stop job now and spent four hours at it yesterday - doesn't look any different

Mrs Shiney spends a lot of time deadheading, cutting back finished plants/shrubs and propagating more plants.

I spend about 15 minutes per day winding up the runner beans (I'm a wind up merchant :heehee:) as they have a habit of trying to go everywhere apart from the canes. The ones that have been obedient have now reached the top of the canes and are starting to flower. :blue thumb: I always keep some spare bean plants in pots in case of slug/snail/rabbit damage but all the plants have survived - with a few snail marks on the leaves. Growing them through the plastic membrane has certainly kept their numbers in that area down and the only damage is near the edge of the plastic. so I planted the 20 spares in another area.

I need to make a start on cutting back the wild area as the grass and weeds are now 3ft-4ft high. I'll have to be careful to avoid the parts where the seeds of the flowers haven't set yet (mainly cowslips etc.). I'm pleased to see that I have more orchids that have popped up. :)

I'm planning on removing a Viburnum in the front garden that's 14ft x 8ft x 8ft. We've had it there for about 40 years but Viburnum beetle makes a mess of it each year. In the back garden we need to reduce a cherry prunus by about 15ft (it's about 50 years old) and to remove a lot of the side trunks. The fit young garden that does our heavy work will come and do that in a couple of weeks time.

Plant sales are still plodding along and we have someone coming this morning for more plants.
