The day before yesterday I recut the paths through the meadows and tidied round the edges a bit in places. I've noticed lots of yellow flowers have appeared in the grasses. No idea what they are - I'll take some pics later. I noticed one of my pots was looking a bit congested as the Scabious I planted seems to have grown rather larger than expected :heehee:. After a battle ( it did not wish to vacate ) I got one out and replanted it into another pot. Both Scabious are looking happier already with more space. Peering into the pond I noticed a blue Damselfly on one of the plants :hapydancsmil::yahoo:.

Too hot yesterday for gardening so spent most of day in shade on a zero g :phew:. Had a bike ride in morning before temperature started rising. A wander about the garden when it had cooled slightly in the early evening and discovered a blue damselfly in the pond again :hapydancsmil:.

            Hi,

What a glorious morning; I feel like going into Morrison's and shouting Aldi; this is what an English summer should be like and it's forecast to last an whole day so we're in for a long summer; tomorrow we're back to normal. :)

I'm truly amazed by our new small meadow; just seeds a few weeks ago and now masses of flowers; it's incredible; people walking along the lane keep stopping to have a good look at the splash of colour; there's a gap in the hedge making it like peeping into a secret garden.

Bron and I have just returned from our local garden center; I wanted a single Potentilla to replace one of six that has died; every plant on the planet but Potentilla; I'll buy one at Hampson's GC in Wakefield next week.

I feel the need to wander down to the workshop.

            Kind regards, Colin.

Meadow flower seeds scattered a few weeks ago to our side garden which is mostly clay; a poor performance compared to the masses of flowers in rich soil at the top of the mountain.

            Gardens_003.JPG
Self seeded Feverfew; we didn't plant it but what a display and it's most welcome.

Our new small meadow; this was bare soil a few weeks ago.

            Gardens_006.JPG
The camera doesn't do this display justice; it looks wonderful and I'm now delighted we chose wild flowers.

            Gardens_008.JPG

From up the mountain; our bungalow is hiding down there somewhere. If only every day was like it is today.

I'm not doing much today as it's too hot and I've a bad cold! I shall feed the birds, water the floor of the greenhouse (proper watering gets done in the evenings) and shall put out water for the bees and wasps - a very important job in this heat. It's very simple to do. All you really need is a large plant saucer and some small stones/pebbles - if you have kids you can use their marbles. Just three quarters cover the stones.

Colin, very beautiful meadow, if you deadhead the flowers they'll flower again.
Not doing anything today, too hot.
Ofcourse I'll have to do the watering tonight.
The wallflower seedlings are coming up,before the sun gets on them i have to move them in the shade in the garage because they don't like the heat when they're germinating.

@Mike Allen I agree with watering at soil level as much as possible. I have set up low flow watering in my raised gardens and hanging pots and they do a great job. All of my greenhouse pots are capillary watered. Last night we received some rain so the lawns will have had a nice drink. Always love free water!

We're having a couple of hot days here too. I have some weeding to do today and tomorrow because grass just loves to spring up in my raised beds (why is it so hard to get it going in bare spots on the lawn?) and I need to get it all done before Monday. I'm having a BBQ for Canada Day and just want to sit and enjoy my family.

                          Hi,

Thanks alana & Logan for your kind comments. Thanks also Logan for the deadheading tip; I'm a complete novice to meadow flowers. I've only ever done gardening on a need to do basis other more pressing jobs demanding my time but now I'm slowly getting the gardening bug and looking at the difference now in our gardens compared to three years ago I'm very encouraged to do more. :)

I'm now reassembling the Colt mower I'm restoring; it's very pleasant working in the workshop and I've just knocked off for a mug of tea whilst the primer paint dries on the roller; in a few minutes I'll pop down and blow it over with finishing gloss and it can then dry over dinnertime in the rare hot sunshine. Life can be so good.

                          Kind regards, Colin.

On Thursday, I finished painting the tea-house ceiling. Before it'd been bare roofing ply off-cuts, some not full panels, for thirty-two years, (it's only a glorified shed). I added the ceiling spots ten years ago.

Two totally unnecessary jobs....but there you go.

                            P1030070.JPG

I mowed the lawn last evening about an hour after I'd had the lawn sprinklers on. The watering tends to make the grass "sit up" when it's really warm and you get a better cut.

Today I gave the little acer at the bottom of the garden a trim. It was getting a bit too big and would eventually dominate that bed.

                            P1030065.JPG

Ooo! I coulda been a hairdreser!

                            P1030068.JPG

The little white hydrangea will get a bit more sun now.

I slso painstakingly removed the dead blossoms from our two tree azaleas. They'll stay here until the spring as they're "doin' nuffin'."

                            P1030067.JPG

I mentioned elsewhere my new £3.99 Aldi pruners with the Teflon coated blades (I've three other types),... but there you go.....

                            P1030058.JPG

A "feature," is this oiling tool with a felt applicator for the blades after use, which slides into the handle, which I've only just noticed as I didn't read all the blurb on the presentation pack.

Well...It's what you'd expect if you're gonna pay that sort of money isn't it?

                            P1030066.JPG

That's it for today, it'll be too hot other for than a quick trip outside to turn on the lawn sprinklers for a bit around 2.00 pm and a mist spray of the acers.

Tennis and football on the TV.

Cut the lawns this morning, drank lots of water, sowed some more mixed lettuce and mixed peppery leaves.

Planted out more plants into the borders (must be getting to the end of them soon !), did a bit of pruning and then a quick sausage butty cooked on the bbq.

Just in from letting the dogs out and will be going out again soon to weed part of the top border.
