Are there any forum members interested in this group and are cultivating properly named varieties. I think I'm about to develop an unhealthy obsession in these. This is bad.
If so what's your best growing medium mix.

BigC, I have developed an “unhealthy obsession” for hellebores, salvias, agastaches, heleniums, sanguisorbas, persicaria, cannas......need I go on??? So, if sempervivens is your passion then go for it. When I see your collection I prob will have an obsession for them too :)

Gary, two ways to go..... chemical Provado, which is very effective all year round. Or a biological control using nematodes that you can apply now.
Be careful about putting on because larvae not hatched yet could well be in the soil.
You use both products applying directly to the soil not the leaves but I think Provado is also systemic so poss a risk to cats for a few days anyway.:)

And due diligence....I keep my eyes open to the adult weevils and squash them when I see them....they often climb walls and reside in evergreens like euonymous where you can see them at night. Keeps numbers down and I seem not to have so many now :)

          Hiya BigC :)

I feed selected plants, e.g.hellebores, but mostly I mulch generously. An organic mulch will feed the soil and not over feed plants, helps retain moisture and looks good. This produces sturdy and not overly lush plants I think :)

Schedule? Mulching in autumn with locally sourced compost and garden compost. New plantings have compost mixed into the soil plus fish, blood and bone, chicken pellets or dried manure. Then mulched. I try to mulch again in spring.....hellebores esp and those plants that benefit from moisture being retained in the soil like hostas, astilbes, astrantias.

My regime for veg patch is heavy mulching then fish blood and bone in the spring :)

Planted out some cucumber seedlings and crossing my fingers this new lot won't get eaten too. Planted out a cannabis plant that had been bullying the other plants in one of the smaller greenhouses. Watered, watered, watered!

I make CBD oil with it. Lovely in Christmas Cake :) But, I do NOT eat and drive. Just in case. I believe I have the dosage correct and always err on the side of too little. But that way, I can eat more cake :heehee:

My plants, all of them, are out there panting. It hit 94f about 15 minutes ago!

apart from the general maintenance of weeding, deadheading, pruning and mowing we have been painting some benches.

                              They've never been painted before.

This one is over 100 years old, an ex park bench made of oak and irregularly over the years I have been oiling it. Mrs Shiney decided she wanted to paint it. It was a tough job. It was extremely absorbent in places because of age and as it was so heavy (the legs are 3" square lengths of oak) it was also very difficult to manoeuvre. It's seven feet long!

It took me a couple of hours of pressure hosing to clean them up properly and then two days to make sure they dried out properly.

This bench is only a youngster at 50 years old (I bought it for my parents) and much easier to do.

The blackbirds have christened them! There's a family of them being brought up in the Euonymous behind. It's their second brood this season. :dbgrtmb:
