Yes the biennial wallflowers that i grow can keep them for another year but i have the summer bedding to put in their place and like to change the colour.

I use the conservatory to start things off and then put them in a lean to grow house, which is about 2ft deep,5ft wide and 5ft high. It has a glass shelf in the middle and 2 racks top and bottom, but i don't use them much and a sprinkler system that was with it.

I thought it was a sandalfoot just starting to sprout

It's been a busy day. I decided to get the rest of the pot rinsing done and did just that. With the exception of about half a dozen that still had seedlings in them. They are dry now but my sore feet are telling me to wait until tomorrow to take them dow to the cellar... oh, wait, no, I think I'll store them in one of the greenhouses until the fall. I don't have near as many as Shineyland so they should fit. Last count was 172 plus the little trays for the soil blocks.

I wired the side fences and hooked them up to the back fence lines. Hopefully that will save me some crabapples this year for jelly. Those nasty 'merican red squirrels can have a few jolts instead. :paladin:

Got lots more to do out there but ran out of energy as I had also baked some baguettes and breads for some friends who were stopping by the back yard to distantly socialize. Earlier I had changed bed linens, did laundry, cleaned loos, vacuumed the main floor and washed the floors as well. :phew: Tonight I will do a dummy run on death!

I had a awful time with grey squirrels in my last garden. They lived in the next door neighbour's huge conifer tree. They completely ransact the garden on a daily basis. Dug up most of the bulbs I planted. The ones they missed they ate the shoots when they grew. Smashed pots and climbed up the brickwork of the house to ransacked any hanging baskets  I gave up in the end as they run riot and the house was rented so knew it wasn't a long term stay for us. Plus it had cost me a lot on plants. To say I was relieved when I moved here and not seeing 1 yet is a understatement :love30: they were a bloomin menace.

@Jasmine star Grey squirrels are a bit of a pest here too. They dug quite a few of my baskets and strawberry planters over the years.
I realized that, not surprisingly, they love soil mixed with vermiculite and perlite, easy to dig in I guess.
So I started topping up with a layer of normal soil and little stones too, which seemed to dissuade them from digging.

I use metal cloth on my pots that squirrels might try to attack. I can do this because I grow the plants in the pots from seed and the seeds just grow up through and the squirrels can't dig :)

                  Thanks!
It has been there a few years now and never seems to grow and never produced any fruit.
Maybe he had its chance and I should put something else:dig::tomato:

I have grey squirrels in the conifers next to me and often see them around, generally moving rapidly towards the scrubland adjoining. They don't cause a huge number of problems for me, yes they have been known to take pears, apples occasionally have bite marks on them. The worse thing is they do take the strawberries if not thoroughly netted. They leave the bulbs pretty much alone, even those in the grass under their trees. They did "plant" a number of horse chestnuts last winter and I often find caches of peanuts. Perhaps I have a lower density of squirrels or they have more natural food around I don't know, but generally we rub along.

@NigelJ the squirrels you have sound a lot better behaved than the group of cheeky brazen ones I had. They literally used to turn up like a group of chimps run riot, fill their tummies then sod off.:gaah:

This is Iris "Kent Pride" which I bought about 3 years ago and which I think has a quiet beauty of it's own

Hopefully, this unnamed Iris will break bud sometime today.

                          Its very beautiful.
Is it harder to grow than your other Iris varieties?

So, 80 hours in, the winners are:
                            1) Some random melon seeds recovered from a £1.50 supermarket melon, pity I did discard a whole bowl of them thinking they would never work.
                            2) Cucumbers seeds from a supermarket, $1.70 for 40 I think.

Hi Aldo, well, it's a Bearded Iris and really once you know and understand what they want then all of them are easy to grow. Mine are on a two tier 20' long wooden bench and lined up on the Patio against a South facing brick wall. Newly planted Bearded Iris probably won't flower the following year but should the next.....maybe, perhaps!!:dunno::heehee: But they are easy to grow.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:
