Is the soil sandy / clay ?
Some hydrangeas do very well in shade , if you are looking at hydrangea the paniculata do better in drier conditions than the normal lacecap / mophead variety's well tolerate it better they still don't like to dry out , I think H.quercifolia is the best for the drier site would would look excellent at the back reaching up to 2m tall, white flowers with a dark red leaves for autumn and its has leaf shape same as oak leaves.

Also worth looking at Acanthus - Japanese aneomes ( can spread like mad ) - epidemiums - brunneria can take dry condtions in there stride when estiblished alexander great is a very good variety for dry shade - geranium marchorrzium and phaeum ideal - euphorbia robbie - liriope

Depending on how dry it is azalea / rhordi should be ok , some osmanthus - viburnums seem to grow anywhere, could try cornus kousa for a back of the border plant.

@Snorky85 Is the soil acid or alkaline? As this can affect your options. Azaleas and Rhododendrons like acid soil also they don't like getting too dry in summer as this affects flower bud formation.

The soil is a little bit clay like-actually quite nice digging into it in comparison to my own heavy clay. Not sure how acidic it is-I'd have to get a testing kit on it. This is the level of light its got today at 2:30

Clearing the god damn awful patch gradually. I've just dug out crocosmia, kniphofia a, irises, purple sage, chives and a couple of achillea. Now I'm clearing all the grass and weeds. Very tiring but very satisfying

I've been trying to clear up after Carol!!!! She's put the Brugs to bed for the winter, that entailed extensive pruning which Vince had to clear, she's also wrapped her banana plants and generally made a mess! Why she does this when we have a gale is beyond me.

Finally all cleared. I'm utterly exhausted. Will put weed suppressant over it in the morning.

After some much needed rain over the past few weeks, we had a dry sunny day today. We will probably have a frost tonight, so I needed to get my skates on!

I’ve cut back the perennial rocket that had dropped its leaves, harvested a big armful of rocket from one of the veg beds. Pulled out the two squash plants, as they had no more fruit on them. Harvested two green courgettes - probably the last of this year. The rocket and courgettes will be used to make courgette pesto (also using our own walnuts, rather than pine nuts). We have found that it keeps in the fridge for at least a couple of weeks, and we might try to freeze some too. I picked the last of the tumbling Tom tomatoes, and the yellow pear tomatoes that were up in the veg beds. They are mostly green, but may ripen. The plants have been cut down / pulled out. Two trugs full of fallen leaves were put in one of the leaf-clamps, although the oaks still haven’t dropped.

Time for a cuppa before making that courgette pesto!

It's my day off again tomorrow:yes::hapydancsmil: so I'm making a list of jobs to do such as clean and sort out paths, remove and bag the fallen leaves from the lawn, the Wildlife pond, and around the borders, plant 200 Crocus, move the large Succulent Pots

into the Green House and then try to sort out the Green House and rearrange the Green House itself.
I've also got to divide two large pots of Astilbes (one into two plants and the other into four plants), divide and pot on about a dozen Primroses, start cutting the Ivy, at the base, along the rear fence by the pond, start pruning the dozen or or climbing Roses along the West side of the Wildlife pond, and then sort out the around 60 Hardy Perennials in pots on the Patio into their varieties ready for their Spring planting, put the 7 Clematis in pots in a sheltered area, dig up a fair number of Teasels that have settled in the wrong places in the borders while leaving enough to flower next year, and then have an amble around the garden with a Mug of Tea to make a list of the jobs I've missed:dunno::heehee::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

I spent nearly 6 happy hours in the garden today attempting to do all the jobs on the list that needed doing. But, on getting down on my knees in the borders to start clearing out the debris, weeds, some of the Teasels and Honesty, I found I had underestimated just how many of the Teasels and Honesty had self seeded:doh: I actually cleared several large garden sacks of Teasels/Honesty which, would you believe, consisted of several hundred plants but along with this I had to clear some of my favourite plants, Forget-me-Nots, out of the borders because there were so many of them.
It's amazing how be shuffling, on your knees, through the borders gives you a much clearer idea of just how really certain plants are growing and spreading and what other jobs need adding to the list and, as daft as it sounds, how much it relaxes you. So, I've still got most of the garden jobs to do and haven't managed to planted the 200 Crocus and 150 Tulip bulbs or bagged up the fallen leaves:dunno::doh: I also managed to find a sack of a couple of hundred last Spring's Tete a' Tete Daffodils which will need planting this Weekend as well.
I ended up at the end of the day covered in soil but happy, my gardening clothes ending up in the Washing Basket and me in the Shower. I guess I'll have to wait until the Weekend until I can start again to whittle down the job list.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

@ARMANDII it's surprising how much you can find when doing such things. When I'm weeding I'm surprised how many bags that i fill up, a few weeks now I have bags waiting around to be emptied but have to wait for the bin men to empty the grey bin so i can fill it up again. :dunno:
